AI investment is increasing, which companies have already made money, and which are still paying for the future?

Tesla, Meta, and IBM's latest financial reports provide different answers: Tesla's profits are under pressure, Meta's advertising business is growing strongly, but AI investment is causing cash flow pressure; IBM's growth is relatively steady, with its software business and cash flow worthy of attention.

The three companies have taken different routes, and the opportunities and risks revealed by their financial reports are also different.

1. Tesla: Weak revenue growth, can self-driving open new space?

Tesla's third-quarter revenue was approximately 28.046 billion USD, adjusted earnings per share were 0.48 USD, and GAAP net profit was around 787 million USD, a year-on-year decrease of about 43%.

Profit pressure is also reflected in operating metrics: operating profit margin dropped to 2.6%, down from 5.8% in the same period last year. Although the overall gross margin rose to 19.6% and free cash flow reached about 1.531 billion USD, the profitability of the automotive business still needs improvement.

In terms of delivery volume, Tesla delivered approximately 486,500 vehicles in the third quarter, a slight decrease year-on-year. Pricing strategy, production costs, and product demand will continue to impact the profitability of the automotive business.

Another main line in the market is self-driving. FSD and Robotaxi are highly anticipated, but whether technological progress can be converted into stable revenue still needs to be observed. For investors, upcoming points of interest include the commercialization progress of self-driving, automotive business profit margins, and the impact of related investments on cash flow.

The key question for Tesla is: can the automotive business stabilize profits, and how long will it take new businesses to contribute substantial revenue?

2. Meta: Strong advertising revenue, AI investment beginning to test cash flow

Meta's third-quarter revenue was approximately 64.6 billion USD, a year-on-year increase of 26%.

Advertising remains the main growth driver, with advertising revenue around 63.061 billion USD; ad impressions increased by 10% year-on-year, and the average ad price rose by 14%.

This indicates that Meta's current AI investments are beginning to yield returns in its advertising business. Algorithm optimization helps ads reach users more accurately, providing support for revenue growth.

On the downside, there is cost pressure. Affected by approximately 9.89 billion USD in legal-related costs and other factors, Meta's operating profit fell by about 37% year-on-year, and the operating profit margin dropped from 40% in the same period last year to 20%. The company's free cash flow for the quarter was approximately negative 2.12 billion USD, and capital expenditures and other cash outflows deserve ongoing attention.

It is important to note that Meta's GAAP net profit was about 9.86 billion USD, an increase year-on-year; however, this increase was impacted by tax factors from the same period last year, and should not be simply interpreted as a significant improvement in the profitability of its main business.

The company expects fourth-quarter revenue to be 73 billion to 76 billion USD. Whether the advertising business can sustain growth and when AI infrastructure investments will yield higher returns will affect market judgments of Meta's future performance.

Meta’s key point of interest is whether advertising business growth can continue to cover the continually increasing AI costs.

3. IBM: Growth not very fast, software and cash flow are key focuses

Compared to Tesla and Meta, IBM's growth pace is steadier.

Third-quarter revenue was approximately 17.103 billion USD, a year-on-year increase of 5%; adjusted earnings per share were 2.95 USD. Software business revenue was around 7.804 billion USD, an increase of about 8% year-on-year, infrastructure business also saw growth, while consulting business performance was relatively flat.

IBM's advantage lies in enterprise clients and long-term service needs. As enterprises deploy AI, hybrid cloud, data management, and enterprise software have opportunities for increased demand, but how much new revenue the technological trend ultimately brings depends on whether clients are willing to keep paying.

Cash flow is also an important observation point. The company's third-quarter free cash flow was approximately 3 billion USD, and it raised its full-year free cash flow outlook. Compared to solely pursuing revenue growth rates, this kind of performance better helps investors judge whether a company can continue to invest in its business and return value to shareholders.

Of course, IBM's rate of growth is not outstanding. It needs to be observed whether the software business can maintain growth and whether AI-related demand can further reflect in revenue and cash flow.

IBM's core focus is whether it can convert enterprise AI demand into sustainable software revenue and cash flow.

4. What are the differences when placing the three companies together?

These three financial reports indicate that the market should not only look at whether companies are involved in AI, but also whether investments are converting into revenue, profits, and cash flow.

Meta has already gained growth momentum from its advertising business, but high investment is still squeezing some financial metrics; Tesla needs to prove the commercial value of new businesses such as self-driving; IBM must continue to convert enterprise AI demand into stable business revenue.

For investors, revenue sees growth, profit margins see operational efficiency, and free cash flow reflects actual financial status. Looking at these three indicators together is more valuable than focusing solely on a single quarter's revenue growth rate.

5. How can ordinary investors track this?

If you want to continuously observe these companies, you can first pay attention to the TSLA, META, IBM revenue, profit margins, and free cash flow, and then compare those with stock price changes after the financial reports are released to see whether the market is trading on growth expectations or is concerned about costs and profitability.
