Traditional asset management institutions are shifting their focus from "issuing tokenized assets" to how to integrate these assets into the practical usage scenarios for Web3 users.
On October 9, Franklin Templeton and Animoca Brands announced a strategic partnership, aiming to explore the introduction of tokenized real-world assets (RWA) into the Animoca-supported NUVA vault market, and to research opportunities related to the tokenization of cultural assets.
The highlight of this collaboration is not just another traditional financial institution entering Web3, but the beginning of a connection between traditional asset management institutions and the Web3 ecosystem in aspects such as asset management, on-chain distribution, and user engagement.
From Asset Issuance to On-Chain Distribution
Franklin Templeton is a key player in the traditional asset management field, continuously engaging in blockchain technology and tokenized assets in recent years. Tokenized funds can map certain rights of traditional financial products onto the blockchain, providing new technological pathways for asset registration, transfer, and settlement.
However, for the RWA industry, asset issuance is only the first step.
Completing the tokenization of an asset does not automatically mean it will gain sufficient liquidity, nor does it imply that ordinary on-chain users can participate directly. How assets enter trading or investment platforms, how they reach potential users, and how they can be utilized while complying with regulatory requirements remain unresolved issues within the industry.
Animoca Brands has long been engaged in the Web3 infrastructure, digital assets, and blockchain applications, and its ecosystem resources are expected to provide new distribution channels for tokenized assets. This collaboration aims to connect traditional financial products with the Web3 ecosystem.
NUVA as a Starting Point for Exploration
This collaboration is centered on the NUVA vault market. This platform is related to the ecosystem layout of Animoca Brands, and both parties plan to explore the introduction of tokenized real-world assets into the relevant product system.
In addition to financial assets, both sides will also explore tokenization opportunities for cultural assets. This means that the scope of cooperation is not limited to traditional funds but also involves how to utilize blockchain technology to carry and distribute different types of assets.
However, it should be noted that announcing a partnership does not mean that all related assets have been fully tokenized and opened to the public. Specific products, asset scope, participation conditions, and subsequent launch timing still need to be based on information released by both parties later.
The RWA Competition is Entering the Next Phase
In the past, discussions in the RWA market primarily focused on whether assets like treasury bonds and money market funds could go on-chain, and whether tokenization could improve settlement efficiency and reduce certain operational costs. As more traditional financial institutions explore on-chain business, industry competition begins to extend beyond asset issuance.
On one hand, traditional asset management institutions possess experience in asset management, product design capabilities, and existing financial business networks; on the other hand, Web3 platforms are closer to on-chain users and have the ecological resources to connect wallets, protocols, and digital asset applications.
If both parties can establish compliant and sustainable product connection methods, traditional financial assets will have the opportunity to enter more on-chain application scenarios. However, this does not imply that all tokenized assets can be freely traded, nor does it indicate that relevant products inherently possess higher liquidity. Investors still need to pay attention to underlying assets, redemption mechanisms, trading restrictions, and applicable regulatory requirements.
The signal released by this collaboration is: the competition for RWA is no longer just about who can move assets on-chain but also about who can establish a complete channel connecting assets, platforms, and users. For the industry, the ability to convert tokenized products into truly usable financial services will become an important observation point in the next phase.
