What kind of tokenized US stocks do you need?

The same US stock can appear in wallets, exchanges, and broker apps, but the rights represented by tokens, the places they can be traded, and whether they can be redeemed directly often do not align. First, confirm the task you want to complete, then look at the product name.

Imagine you want to buy a bit of exposure to Nvidia; the search box might show NVDAx, NVDAon, or it might show a Nvidia stock token in a broker app. They are all related to the price of NVDA, but they may not necessarily be sold in the same place, nor are they necessarily under the same issuer's responsibility for redemption.

On October 8, Securitize announced the first batch of 12 US stock security entitlement tickers. With the increase in supply, the comparison method should be more straightforward: do you want self-custody, sell on weekends, receive cash dividends, or access shareholder rights? These four needs will separate the options. (Securitize)

1. Self-Custody: First Look at On-Chain Transfers, Then Look at Direct Redemption

xStocks' documentation defines it as a tracking certificate: the underlying stocks or ETFs are held by regulated custodians, and the on-chain tokens provide a 1:1 economic exposure. Tokens can be transferred across supported public chains, exchanges, and DeFi venues, reinvested after tax deductions on dividends, reflected through balance adjustments; holders have no voting rights in the public company. (How xStocks Work, xStocks FAQ)

Ondo Stocks also places stock and ETF exposures on-chain. Their website states that the underlying stocks, ETFs, and pending cash support the tokens, with an independent verification party checking the supporting assets every business day; dividends are reinvested after tax deductions and accounted for in the total return. The website lists over 450 stocks and ETFs, which is the product range, but does not equal sufficient buying demand for each asset. (Ondo Stocks)

Neither can equate on-chain transferability with everyone being able to redeem. xStocks does not require prior account opening with the issuer to transfer in the secondary market, but direct subscriptions or redemptions with the issuer require KYC, with a minimum amount of $5000. Ondo allows tokens to circulate on-chain and in third-party venues that comply with restrictions, but only non-US users who have completed onboarding can mint or redeem directly with Ondo; unqualified individuals can only continue holding or seek buyers in permitted secondary markets. (xStocks FAQ, Ondo Stocks)

2. Weekend Trading: 24/7 Does Not Mean 24/7 Redemption

Selling NVDAx on Saturday, the transaction target might just be another buyer on the secondary market. The xStocks documentation shows that primary subscriptions and redemptions typically operate on US market business days 24/5; secondary markets can trade 24/7 according to platform rules. If the issuer's subscription and redemption window is closed and buying demand is thin, prices may deviate from the latest US stock reference price. (xStocks FAQ)

Ondo states that the six assets NVDAon, SPYon, CRCLon, TSLAon, QQQon, GOOGLon can be directly subscribed and redeemed 24/7, while other assets typically operate 24/5. However, this only applies to qualified non-US users who have completed onboarding and is affected by underlying market closures, system maintenance, corporate actions, extreme volatility, and risk control pauses. For those who have not completed eligibility verification, 24/7 more refers to secondary transfers and trading times rather than stable issuer exits. (Ondo Stocks)

The IMF's analysis on October 8 can explain demand and also reminds not to overestimate liquidity. In their observations of tokenized stock transactions, over half occurred outside traditional market hours, about 80% being less than 1 share; the same article also mentions that the current tokenized market still relatively lacks liquidity, has higher volatility, and is fragmented across different networks and venues. Observing the buy-sell spread, transaction depth, and exit venues is more useful than simply looking at the 24/7 label. (IMF)

3. Convenience and Shareholder Rights Are Two Different Paths

Robinhood's European version of Classic Stock Tokens covers over 2000 assets related to US stocks and ETPs, trading 24/5 within the app. If the underlying pays dividends, qualifying holders will receive the corresponding cash amount in their Robinhood accounts. However, it is a derivative contract between the user and Robinhood and does not grant rights to the underlying stocks; the page lists conversion fees between euros and dollars at 0.1% per transaction. It is suitable for comparison to account-based convenience but does not meet self-custody needs. (Robinhood EU)

Securitize's announcement on October 8 of the 12 security entitlement tickers is closer to the securities account path: with 1:1 support for underlying stocks, designed to retain applicable economic benefits and rights while being convertible into direct holdings on the issuer's transfer agent ledger when available. The restrictions are likewise clear: trading occurs within Securitize's registered broker-dealer system, targeting qualified investors in the US, EU, and other permissible jurisdictions; unless the conversion is completed, holders are not registered shareholders of the underlying company. (Securitize Announcement, Securitize Stocks)

Dividends should not be mixed. xStocks reflects post-tax reinvestment through balance adjustments; Ondo includes post-tax dividends in total returns; Robinhood credits corresponding cash to qualified users in their accounts; and Securitize handles applicable economic benefits and rights according to the security entitlement structure. Those looking to use dividends as cash flow must distinguish between cash receipts, balance increases, and token value changes. (xStocks FAQ, Ondo Stocks, Robinhood EU, Securitize Announcement)

4. Filter Unsuitable Products with Four Questions

If the goal is self-custody and cross-application usage, first compare the chains, wallets, specific stocks, and secondary market quotations supported by xStocks and Ondo. The $5000 direct subscription and redemption threshold of xStocks will affect the backup exits for smaller holders; the direct subscription and redemption eligibility of Ondo will affect the exit methods for users who have not onboarded. A wallet being able to receive tokens only indicates that it can technically receive them, not that you have the qualifications for purchase, trading, or redemption by the issuer. (xStocks FAQ, Ondo Stocks)

If the goal is simply to track US stock prices with small amounts, place traditional broker fractional shares, available funds, and token products in the same cost table. On-chain products will incur wallet management, network fees, stablecoin conversions, and venue spreads. Kraken's xStocks FAQ provides a specific example: purchasing using USD or USDG incurs no trading fees, but the price may include spreads; Kraken Pro has a taker fee of 10 basis points, that is, about $1 for a $1000 order, not considering other costs. This figure only applies to that channel and should not be extrapolated to all platforms. (Kraken xStocks FAQ)

If the goal is voting, registered shareholding, or consistently receiving cash dividends, similar stock codes are not sufficient grounds. Securitize showcases the security entitlement path, but there are qualified investor, platform review, and jurisdictional restrictions; a regular securities account may be more direct. xStocks, Ondo, Robinhood, and Securitize are not open to all regions, particularly mainland Chinese readers should not interpret on-chain transferability as legal purchase, trading, or redemption in their locales.

When opening any product page, first select a familiar stock, and note down the four visible answers: whether it can be used in your region; whether it can be transferred to your own wallet; whether your holdings can be directly redeemed by the issuer; and what is the buy-sell spread and achievable depth when selling now. The four answers will change with the asset, channel, and time, and they are more indicative of real usability than the token name.
