Trump applies pressure while leaving room for negotiation, as countries promote the resumption of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

Today at the United Nations, Trump made strong remarks against Iran while emphasizing the possibility of dialogue. He called on all countries to fully isolate Iran economically, demanded the resumption of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, reiterated that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons, and reserved the option of further military action, while also expressing confidence that an agreement could be reached after the mid-term elections.

He accused Iran of attacking commercial ships and violating the ceasefire, also claiming that the United States continues to assist tankers in passing through the strait. Rubio later expressed a willingness to engage with Iran during the General Assembly but stated that no meetings had been arranged. From these statements, it appears that Trump still hopes to pressure Iran into accepting conditions, with a clear willingness to negotiate.

Among the discussions by other countries, the security of neighboring countries and the passage of commercial ships constituted a significant portion.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, and Turkey support resolving the conflict through diplomacy, calling for the U.S. and Iran to adhere to the previous Islamabad memorandum, but the same statement also condemns Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, supporting Saudi self-defense. For these countries, peace talks must also address issues of neighboring countries being attacked and threats to shipping.

France, in talks with the United States during the General Assembly, proposed protecting Middle Eastern energy facilities and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while the G7 called for Iran to stop providing weapons and support to the Houthis and demanded the Houthis cease attacks on civilian vessels. Guterres also called for a ceasefire and the protection of navigational rights during the General Assembly.

Qatar is already discussing how to engage with Iran after the war ends. It advocates for establishing a common security arrangement between Iran and Gulf countries that does not pose a threat to each other, while fostering economic cooperation to create mutual dependence, stating that the side undermining regional security must bear the consequences.

After all, even if a deal is struck between the U.S. and Iran, Gulf countries will still have to coexist as neighbors with Iran and do not wish to become targets again if U.S.-Iran tensions escalate. The UAE thus emphasizes that regional security requires direct talks between Iran and Arab countries, and neighboring countries must be involved in these arrangements, with their own security concerns placed on the negotiation table.
