Monad Metropolis Hangzhou Station 9.19 | When AI Agents Start Spending Money, Where Are the New Opportunities?

From cash to card, from card to mobile, from counter transfer to automatic debit, the forms of payment have changed many times. But one thing has never changed: the final press of the payment button has always been a person.

Agent is the first exception.

It can purchase APIs, rent computing power, and settle accounts with another Agent on its own. And the whole system designed around "people" for decades—identity, authorization, limits, risk control, disputes—has to face a non-human payment entity for the first time.

Thus, three very simple questions suddenly have no standard answers: What gives it the authority to pay on your behalf? Who sets the limit? Who to contact if a payment is wrong?

On September 19, we brought these questions to Hangzhou.

This Hangzhou station focuses on AI Application Scenarios × Agentic Payment × Next-Generation Financial Technology. We do not want to discuss far-reaching concepts, but rather dive deep into a few specific issues:

  • What stage is Agent Payment currently at?

  • Which scenarios have really landed, and which are still in demo?

  • For entrepreneurs and builders, what positions are still worth targeting?

On-site, there will be teams currently building, investors, and individuals coming from different domains such as AI, payment, Crypto, and fintech.

Not Just to Listen, Bring Your Project Along

This time we have specifically set aside time for Builder Demos.

If you are participating in Metropolis, or if you are currently working on products related to AI Agents, Payment, Trading, Fintech, or Crypto Consumer, you can bring your project to the site. Even if it’s just a very early demo, that’s fine—showcase it on-site, receive feedback from builders and mentors, and even have direct discussions with investors, ecosystem teams, and potential partners.

Sometimes, chatting online for a week is not as effective as a five-minute demo on-site.

Metropolis Global Hackathon Ongoing

Metropolis is Monad’s annual flagship hackathon, lasting for 6 weeks, primarily online, and open to builders globally (September 1, 2026 – October 13, 2026), with total prizes and resources exceeding $250,000.

Four major tracks:

  • 💻 On-chain Finance and Trading

Exploring new asset primitives, markets, and trading infrastructure in a high-speed settlement environment.

Includes prediction markets, Exotic Options, RWA, parametric insurance, and more novel financial products leveraging high-performance on-chain environments.

  • 💵 Consumer Products and Payments

Exploring real consumer-facing on-chain product experiences, allowing Crypto capabilities to gradually integrate into the products themselves, rather than being a barrier for users.

Includes social payments, programmable gifts, payroll flow payments, micro-insurance, and other directions.

Here, the focus is not just on financial mechanisms, but on product experiences that users genuinely want to use.

  • 🌐 Social, Attention, and Culture

Exploring open social graphs, Feed algorithms, attention markets, TCG, generative art, and more new applications emerging around social relationships, communities, and digital culture.

When value, attention, and social relationships can be recombined on-chain, new product forms will also emerge.

  • 🔄 Trust, Identity, and AI Infrastructure

For the AI-native Internet, exploring the next generation of trust and identity infrastructure.

Directions include Proof of Personhood, Content Passports, Data Lockers, Cross-app AI Memory, etc.

Builders can also explore around Monad's P256 / WebAuthn, ERC-8004, Encrypted Mempools, etc., building infrastructure that can be further utilized by other applications and developers.

The overall champion will receive $30,000, with multiple Bounties and Credits available.

The online hackathon and offline events operate independently, allowing participation in either one or both.

Metropolis is not just a hackathon.

In the next 6 weeks, builders from around the world will explore a more significant question together, centered around Finance, Payments, Social, AI, Identity, and other directions:

What becomes possible on Monad?

New markets, new consumer products, new social experiences, and infrastructures for the AI-native Internet may all start from a new Idea.

Metropolis is live. Build What’s Next on Monad.
