Justin Bebis: From "automatically collecting crops" on Fantom to AI market making on Robinhood Chain

Recently, if you've noticed @justinbebis because of Pons, Mosh, or Bundle Cat, you might be curious:

Who is this project person that popped up?

First, he is not the Justin who sang "Baby."

This Justin's career path resembles that of an "old engineer" in on-chain finance: first studying how to make money operate automatically, then studying how to let AI take over these operations.

To get to know him, you need to rewind a few years.

1/ His starting point is writing code, not writing promotional texts

Justin Bebis is a self-taught programmer and the founder of Byte Masons.

In 2022, an official article from the Fantom Foundation introduced him. At that time, he had been involved in developing http://Reaper.Farm for nearly a year and had taken on roles such as technical consultant, architecture design, programming, or security engineering in over a dozen software projects.

In other words, many people got to know DeFi from "how much annualized yield this pool offers."

What he did was study how the contracts behind this pool actually operate. Introduction by Fantom officials

The name Byte Masons is also quite fitting: it can be understood as "people who build walls with bytes."

While others are busy discussing which building will appreciate, he leads a team studying pipes, circuits, and load-bearing walls.

2/ The things he has done are actually very close to veteran players

Let's talk about http://Reaper.Farm.

This is a yield optimization project, with core functions including automatic reinvestment: taking the profits generated by strategies and reinvesting them.

In a way that old miners can understand, it is about handing over the repetitive tasks of "collecting crops, processing profits, and replanting" to the program.

You decide which plot to plant, and the machine carries out the work according to the strategy. Reaper public code

Now, let's discuss Granary.

This is a lending-oriented project. According to Justin's review, the Granary team found Byte Masons in 2021, and the two parties gradually developed a deep collaboration from technical services, involving development training, deployment management, and clearing infrastructure.

So, the accurate statement is not "he invented all these protocols alone," but that the team he led has long participated in the actual construction of DeFi products. Justin's review of Granary

There is also a project that more clearly reflects his thinking: Reliquary.

Its public code repository lists Justin as one of the co-designers and writers.

This system can incorporate the time funds are involved into the reward distribution and can use financial NFTs to represent underlying positions, so transferring positions does not necessarily mean withdrawing the underlying liquidity. Reliquary code and design documentation

In simpler terms:

It not only looks at how much money you brought but also how long you are willing to stay.

Long-term participants and those who come in to grab a quick profit can receive different incentives.

This is not just "renaming the pool and writing a bigger annualized yield," but adjusting the game rules.

3/ To understand his view on crypto, you need to see what problems he is always solving

Putting these projects together, I would summarize his focus into three things:

Can funds be less idle?

Can rewards encourage long-term participation?

Can complex operations be entrusted to the system?

This is also why his resume reads more like a construction record in on-chain finance than a hot coin list.

Of course, this record also includes accidents.

In 2022, a vulnerability incident occurred in Reaper's multi-strategy vault, resulting in a loss of about $1.7 million. The team later published a review and recovery, compensation plan. What can be confirmed here is that the incident and subsequent plans should not be directly stated as having completed all compensation. Event record at the time

His engineering experience includes both building systems and facing the reality of problems occurring within the systems.

4/ Later, he began to find DeFi too difficult to use

There is a quite comedic aspect to DeFi:

It advertises as "finance accessible to everyone."

However, when actually operating it feels like taking an "exam in browser tab management."

Finding protocols, looking at yields, swapping assets, cross-chain, adjusting positions... after a full set of processes, before you even calculate the profits, the computer fan has already started working.

Conclave mentioned in an official introduction in 2024 that the team had already begun working on http://Usemoon.ai, motivated by the desire to solve usability barriers in blockchain products, and then pushed this path to Cod3x.

The goal is to combine AI and DeFi tools to handle complex operations with a more unified entry point. Conclave's introduction to Cod3x

If the early work was "creating financial tools," this stage is:

The tools are already laid out on the table; can we not require every user to read the manual first?

5/ Now at UV Labs, they want AI to progress from "understanding finance" to "doing finance"

Justin is currently the CEO of UV Labs. UV Labs team page

The focus of their current research is enabling AI to better handle financial tasks that require continuous decision-making.

There is a very important distinction here:

Having AI explain what a stop-loss is, and having it continuously manage a real position are two different things.

The former is like a financial broadcaster, the latter needs to genuinely work.

According to UV Labs' product description, the infrastructure they are building includes: calling different models, obtaining market information, executing trades, and checking position limits, risk exposure, and other rules before execution.

In simple terms, this means equipping AI with a market screen, operation console, and a set of rules that cannot be casually bypassed. UV Harness product description

They also emphasize one type of data: decision-making process.

Not only recording price rises and falls, but also documenting what was seen at the time, why actions were taken, what tools were called upon, and the outcomes.

This is very similar to trading reviews:

Just looking at delivery receipts tells you how much a person made; combining the complete process gives a chance to understand how they did it. UV Labs decision data introduction

From this route, his work on AI is not entirely disconnected from his past DeFi experiences.

Before he was building tools, now he is attempting to equip those tools with a continuous operator.

6/ This route has recently extended to Pons and the Robinhood Chain

Justin recently announced the new protocol Mosh on Pons.

According to his introduction, Mosh aims to improve the risk-reward relationship between bundled snipers and ordinary traders by equipping tokens with AI market makers; the first public experiment is Bundle Cat.

At the time of release, he also stated that a complete platform would be launched. This is an ongoing new project, not a mature conclusion that has been fully validated. Justin's recent project introduction, public post mirror

Putting this back into his resume makes it easier to understand:

Reaper studies how to automatically handle profits.

Reliquary studies how to change reward distribution.

Cod3x and UV Labs examine how to involve AI in financial operations.

Mosh then advances the application of AI into the specific scenarios of new coin trading and market making.

It seems that the project names have gone through several rounds of changes, but the underlying issues are very coherent:

Can we change the way funds operate through code and mechanism design?

7/ So how should we remember this person?

I would understand Justin Bebis as a "mechanism and engineering-driven" crypto entrepreneur.

Getting to know him, the most useful thing isn't to first ask, "Which coin did he mention today," but to see which rules he is trying to change, which steps he aims to reduce, and what these ideas ultimately achieve.

His story goes from yield tools in the era of Fantom, through financial AI, into market-making experiments on new chains.

To wrap it up with a slightly down-to-earth phrase:

Others study how to work less.

What Justin has been studying over the years is how to make code and AI do more work.
