My first night in Yuanshan — — Lying is for dogs

By the time I got back to the hotel, it was already past 3 a.m. After finishing my homework, it was dawn. Since I had a bit to drink with my friends, I was so tired that I went to bed without even taking a shower.

I remember very clearly that when I went to sleep, it was after 5 a.m. I was still a bit muddled, thinking that even if something happened, it wouldn't take place once it was light out.

I fell asleep almost as soon as I lay down; I fall asleep quickly, so I must have started dreaming right away. I can't remember the content of the dream clearly, but the outcome was that I was killed in a very short time within the dream.

If being killed in a dream was just a nightmare, it wouldn't be too much of a problem. I don't know if my friends ever experienced another layer of dream within a dream; there was a movie called “Inception” that talked about dreams having many layers, and I've seen horror films that feature a dream within a dream.

I did. After being killed, I woke up and found that I couldn't move. I clearly knew I was lying in bed, but there was a difference between being unable to move completely and just being unable to move my lower half. I remember that I even lifted my head to look at the window, and it was completely dark outside.

I couldn't move; my lower half was immobile, while my upper half was fine. It was a very short time. When I was killed in the dream, I woke up and realized I couldn't move, and then I was quickly killed again.

I don't remember what I was killed by in the dream, but I have a vague impression of exhaustion, and it was quick—almost like dreaming, encountering events, and being killed. Being killed immediately made me wake up, and waking up led to being killed again. After being killed again, I really woke up; I could check my phone, drink water, move normally, and even use the bathroom.

If it ended here, I would feel like I was just overthinking or merely dreaming.

This process lasted for more than three hours. I counted; I don't remember it clearly, but I estimate I was killed more than 20 times—killed in the dream, waking up then being killed again, a total of more than 20 times. I don't remember the reasons for being killed in the first layer of the dream, but I do remember that the methods varied greatly; there were almost no similar ways to die, but indeed, it was all very quick, with no suffering, no torture (or so I think).

Strangely, after the second time, that is, after waking up in the dream, I often found myself unable to move, or the door suddenly opened, or I felt someone sleeping next to me. I was alone, and once I even kicked the person beside me after waking from the first layer of nightmare, and immediately woke up.

Everything I say is the truth, with no exaggeration, no scripting.

This was the first time I had a perspective similar to a horror movie; I was so tired that even after waking up, I would fall asleep again immediately, without any opportunity for anything else. Even if I got up to drink water, I would sleep right back after drinking. How to say it... I was sweating all over, but my body and mind had to sleep; I was so incredibly tired, and as soon as I slept, I would be killed, and after being killed, I would enter the second layer; in the second layer, I could move.

Each time I was killed, whether in the first or second layer, I experienced fear. I can't recall clearly now, but I must have been scared awake, especially in the second layer. The first layer was mostly being killed physically, while the second layer was almost all about being killed mentally. I faintly remember in the first layer being stabbed with a knife, being chased, but in the second layer, I couldn't even tell how I died.

Finally, I remember waking up around eight or nine o'clock, seeing that the sky had finally lightened. Before, when I woke up, the room was completely dark, that kind of darkness, and I could see a hint of brightness. When I woke up this time, I had a feeling that I could finally sleep well, and indeed I fell asleep, having a nearly complete long dream. Although there were some twists in the dream, I truly didn't die again. When I woke up next, it was already 12:30.

When I woke up, I asked my friends who were also staying at the hotel but in different rooms. Both of them were fine. Then I received a message from Zhou Zhou, and I told her about it. She told me to hurry and change hotels or rooms, but I felt I could stay a bit longer, and I had a feeling that this nightmare shouldn't appear again.

To this day, I’m a bit confused; I've thought for a long time, and I don't even know if the whole process was just a dream, a three-layer dream. I really should have woken up around eight or nine o'clock; before that, I was dreaming. I feel this explanation I have written feels the most reliable because I always remembered that the room was pitch dark, but in reality, it was already bright in Taipei since six o'clock.

At the time, I felt quite afraid, but thinking about it now, it wasn't that terrifying. My friend said it was likely just a mix of drinking + fatigue + thinking of events that happened here before, and I feel that’s quite possible.

So I’ve come to this point and decided to change the title. The event is real, but it should just be a dream; it likely wasn't that eerie. 😂 The scenery here is pretty good, surrounded by mountains and water.
