August 2026 saw a significant rise in security incidents in the cryptocurrency sector, despite a significant decrease in the total amount stolen when compared to July. According to data from PeckShieldAlert, there were 50 significant hacks in the industry in August, a 67% increase from 30 in July.

The total losses came to about $136.3 million. Losses decreased 49.5% month over month from about $270 million in July, despite an increase in attacks. The August figures were dominated by one incident. TectonicFi lost about $74 million, which is more than half of all money that was taken during the month.

After the Drift, KelpDAO/LayerZero, and COLDCARD wallet exploits, PeckShield ranked the incident as the fourth biggest cryptocurrency theft of 2026 thus far. However, it appears that the attacker had trouble transferring the majority of the pilfered assets. The bulk of the impacted funds remained trapped within the ecosystem, with only about $6 million reportedly bridged away before Cronos paused its chain.

The exploiter then started laundering accessible funds, including shifting assets toward Bitcoin, according to PeckShield. Even though the other incidents were much smaller, taken as a whole, they show how pervasive attacks had become. Termlabs lost $8.5 million, Coinsbuy lost $7.9 million, TAC lost $7.5 million, and Moonwell lost roughly $8.7 million.

Fresh security trends

MANTRA lost $3.6 million and Injective recorded losses of about $4.8 million. At about $3 million, $2.87 million, and $2.47 million, respectively, BounceBit, Cosmos Labs, and Aquifer rounded out the biggest incidents. As a result, the monthly figures reveal two distinct security trends.

Although there was a significant decrease in financial damage starting in July, the frequency of significant incidents increased considerably. This distinction is important. Although August's total theft figure was not higher, the number of significant hacks increased from 30 to 50, indicating a significant rise in the frequency of security lapses.

August shows that decreasing dollar losses should not be confused with improved crypto security, as $136.3 million was stolen in 50 incidents. Although there were more attacks on the industry, the overall damage was not as high as it was in the previous month.
