Iran is ready to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but whether Trump is willing to restart the June agreement is uncertain.

The Iranian president discussed several matters related to Hormuz today. The U.S. needs to lift the maritime blockade and sanctions on Iranian ports, release frozen Iranian funds, and also demand Israel stop attacking Lebanon. As long as the U.S. fulfills its promises in the previous memorandum of understanding, Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran and Oman have already negotiated new shipping routes, and the Iranian president stated that this route has been communicated to the commander of the Revolutionary Guard. This means the restoration of navigation is no longer just a diplomatic discussion; specific routes and implementation departments have already begun arrangements.

This differs from the conditions proposed by Iran a few days ago. On August 27, the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran mentioned demands including lifting port blockades, removing sanctions, ending regional wars, and compensating for war losses. However, today the Iranian president reiterated the June memorandum of understanding, without mentioning war compensation this time.

The June agreement originally involved the U.S. lifting the maritime blockade on Iranian ports, restoring exemptions for Iranian oil exports, Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and both parties continuing discussions on sanctions, frozen funds, nuclear issues, and subsequent economic arrangements. Iran and Oman were responsible for discussing the management of the waterways in Hormuz.

Therefore, I think Iran's recent change in attitude is not surprising. After half a year of conflict, the U.S. has not overthrown the Iranian regime, and Iran has not forced the U.S. to withdraw from the Middle East by blocking Hormuz. Now the U.S. continues to strengthen maritime and financial sanctions, and Iran's oil exports, foreign exchange income, imports, and domestic economy are under increasing pressure. Continuing to drag this situation is not beneficial for Iran itself.

Iran's recent diplomatic tone is also changing. The Iranian president has begun to repeatedly emphasize the improvement of relations with neighboring countries, and the Iranian foreign minister is also talking about Lebanon, Egypt, and other neighbors. Now even the new shipping route for Hormuz has been discussed with Oman, indicating that Iran is clearly considering how to end the current state of prolonged blockade.

However, there is still a significant problem on the U.S. side. Trump has clearly rejected the extension of the June agreement, and the U.S. government has recently communicated several times to the countries involved in mediation that it is unwilling to accept the previous conditions again.

So the current situation has turned into the Iranian president starting to re-emphasize the June agreement, war compensation is not mentioned again, and the shipping route for Hormuz has even been prepared in advance. Next, it depends on whether Trump will reconsider.

If the U.S. is willing to renegotiate the June plan, the possibility of resuming large-scale navigation through Hormuz is still very high.
