In 2026, Xu Jiayin was sentenced to life imprisonment. From the son of a poor farmer to a real estate tycoon, from China's richest to lifelong imprisonment, his life has been nothing short of turbulent.

If you pull back the lens of time, you will find that "criticizing the rich" is almost a tradition in Chinese history.

Shi Chong of the Western Jin dynasty, wealthy enough to rival a country, ended up with his entire family executed. It turns out that no matter how much wealth one has, it cannot withstand the collapse of the supporting power.

Shen Wansan, the richest in Jiangnan during the early Ming dynasty, was exiled to the border by Zhu Yuanzhang and died away from home in Yunnan.

Hu Xueyan of the late Qing dynasty, rose to prominence through collusion between officials and businessmen, becoming a prominent "red-top businessman," but ultimately faced confiscation of his assets and dismissal, ending his life in depression. The reason why being China's richest is a high-risk profession is not because wealth itself is sinful.

The real crux lies in the fact that in this land, if a person wants to reach the pinnacle of wealth, they often cannot escape the rent-seeking of power and the collusion of interests.

When the foundation of wealth is rooted in power, a change in the direction of power means that a downfall is just around the corner.
