Introduction: The Watershed of Balance Sheet Quality

On August 14, 2026, as we review the asset ledgers of publicly traded companies in the U.S. stock market at the end of the second quarter earnings report season, the management logic of companies regarding crypto treasury has undergone profound differentiation. In the past, the market simply judged heroes by the "amount of currency held"; today, companies with ample fiat cash reserves (such as Riot's $548 million) and high gross margin core business capabilities (like Bit Digital's 57.9% gross margin) can navigate the volatility with ease; in contrast, entities relying on high staking rates and issuing debt to buy currency must sell off underlying assets at a loss under pressure from courts and creditors to settle debts.

The Liquidity Great Wall of Bit Digital and Riot Platforms: Spot Reserves and Cash Defense Line

Yesterday, the second-quarter accounts disclosed by Bit Digital ($BTBT) and Riot Platforms ($RIOT) showcased the defensive depth of top publicly listed treasury companies in the open market.

Bit Digital achieved $32.1 million in revenue in the second quarter (up 15% quarter-on-quarter), with a gross margin as high as 57.9%, successfully narrowing the net loss attributable to shareholders. In addition to $83.6 million in cash equivalents, their enormous reserve of 164,310.5 ETH provides continuous on-chain rights and asset support.

Meanwhile, mining giant Riot Platforms ($RIOT) demonstrated an exceptional overall risk resistance capability. Q2 recorded $174.2 million in revenue, with the data center business contributing $23.2 million in hardcore cash flow. By the end of the quarter, the company held over $1.2 billion in liquid assets, which included 11,380 BTC and up to $548.9 million in fiat cash reserves. Even with 5,821 BTC used as collateral, the extremely high cash ratio still ensured that it did not need to be forced to sell currency to cover mining costs of $49,912 per coin.

Nakamoto's $45 Million Settlement Case: The Hidden Dangers of High-Leverage Staking Debt

In stark contrast to Bit Digital and Riot's substantial liquidity reserves is Nakamoto's ($NAKA) arduous debt restructuring.

Financial reports show that Nakamoto's Q2 revenue was $35.87 million, with a net loss of $133 million. To alleviate debt risks, the company sold about 600 BTC and some derivative positions during the quarter, generating a net yield of $48 million, which was fully used to repay a $45 million Bitcoin collateralized loan.

Although the sale of spot assets temporarily lifted the pledge alarm, the company’s financial structure remains fragile: of the remaining 4,467 BTC (fair value approximately $262 million), as many as 3,805 (over 85%) are locked as debt collateral, while the overall debt scale the company faces still amounts to $165 million. This model of utilizing the majority of crypto reserves for high-leverage collateral without abundant cash flow reinvestment can easily fall into a vicious cycle of "currency price volatility—supplementing collateral—passively selling currency."

The Q2 financial report data from August 13 has sounded the alarm again: the competition among corporate crypto treasuries has fully entered an era of refined capital operations. Entities with high fiat cash flow and low staking rates (such as Riot and Bit Digital) are building competitive barriers through solid balance sheets; while companies that blindly leverage and buy currency at high staking rates must reap the bitter fruit of selling off spot assets to repay debt. Liquidity and debt ratio have become the only standard for verifying the authenticity of corporate-level digital treasuries.
