The financial report blew expectations and surged after hours, has Intel really turned the corner this time?

After Intel announced its second-quarter financial report for 2026 on July 23, its stock price significantly rose in after-hours trading. The market's reaction was triggered not by a single figure, but by the simultaneous positive results in revenue, data centers, foundry losses, and third-quarter guidance relative to previous pessimistic expectations.

The financial report showed that Intel's revenue in the second quarter was $16.1 billion, a year-over-year increase of 25%, with a non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.42. The company expects third-quarter revenue to be between $15.8 billion and $16.8 billion, with a non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.38. Under GAAP, the company reported a second-quarter loss per share of $2.16, with a net loss of approximately $11 billion, indicating profit improvement is not yet fully positive.

For investors, Intel has been seen as a laggard in the AI era over the past few years. The narrative surrounding GPUs belongs to Nvidia, advanced manufacturing belongs to TSMC, and server CPUs still face pressure from AMD. This report made the market question again: Can Intel return to the AI infrastructure chain?

Three Lines Allow Market to Reprice

This change lies in the fact that Intel no longer relies solely on a single business to talk about recovery. The growth in data center revenue, narrowing foundry losses, and improved operating cash flow jointly supported the after-hours revaluation.

The first line is DCAI, i.e., Data Center and AI business, mainly including products such as server CPUs. The core acceleration capability for AI training and inference is provided by GPUs, but data centers still require CPUs for general computation, scheduling, networking, and backend tasks.

In the second quarter, Intel's DCAI revenue was approximately $6.3 billion, a year-over-year increase of 59%. This figure cannot directly prove that Intel has regained server share from AMD, but it is sufficient to indicate that the expansion of AI data centers is also driving the refresh of server platforms.

The second line is Foundry, i.e., chip foundry business. Intel does not only manufacture chips for itself but also tries to manufacture chips for external customers. The biggest worry in the market has been that this business requires significant investment, slow customer validation, and unclear returns on advanced processes.

The financial report showed that Foundry's revenue in the second quarter was approximately $5.8 billion, a year-over-year increase of 31%, and operating losses narrowed from $3.168 billion in the same period last year to $2.089 billion. Intel’s division revenue includes internal transactions, so the $5.8 billion cannot be directly interpreted as revenue from external foundry customers; it is more suitable to view it as a signal of operational improvement.

DCAI Brings Intel Back to AI Server Narrative

Intel's position in AI cannot be assessed solely by the presence of the most powerful GPU. Large AI data centers are not just purchasing acceleration cards, but also CPUs, networking, memory, storage, and power systems. As long as cloud providers continue to expand AI clusters, server platforms will enter a renewal cycle.

The 59% growth in DCAI at least shows that Intel has not been completely marginalized in the era of AI infrastructure. It can still generate revenue increases from the expansion of server demand, which allows the market to reassess the company’s position in the CPU cycle.

This judgment still needs to retain its boundaries. The strong performance of DCAI may come from the expansion of AI spending and may also include factors such as inventory replenishment, product cycles, and low bases. It demonstrates that revenue is growing, but it does not independently prove that the long-term competitive landscape has reversed.

DCAI is more like a ticket to enter. Intel has regained a seat at the AI data center table, but several more quarters will be needed to prove that this is not a short-term rebound amplified by industry prosperity.

Foundry Improvement Still in Verification Phase

The foundry business determines another layer of valuation. Whether Intel can transform from a traditional IDM, meaning a company that designs and manufactures chips itself, into an external foundry choice in the U.S. advanced manufacturing chain, is one of the core variables for its re-evaluation by the market.

14A is the long-term technological anchor point here. It can be understood as Intel's next-generation advanced manufacturing process, aimed at serving the needs for higher performance and lower power consumption chips. The management's positive statements regarding advanced processes and customer collaborations also tie it to the foundry transformation in the eyes of the market.

However, 14A cannot be written off as having been broadly commercially validated. Intel’s second-quarter report explicitly mentioned risks related to 18A-P production and high-volume production of Panther Lake; 14A mainly remains in the context of forward-looking statements and risk disclosures. At this stage, it is more appropriate to view it as a technical narrative anchor rather than as confirmed large external orders.

The revenue growth in Foundry and the narrowing losses indicate that operational metrics are improving. External customer interest or collaboration clues suggest that Intel has the opportunity to change the market’s perception of “no major customers willing to bet on it.” However, there are still hurdles to overcome in yield, delivery, cost, and customer introduction before signals can be converted into scalable revenue.

Higher Capital Expenditures Push Pressure onto Cash

Higher capital expenditures are the most tense part of this financial report. According to Reuters, Intel has raised its capital expenditure expectations for 2026 to over $20 billion and stated that capital expenditures for 2027 will be significantly higher than for 2026. The more confident the management is, the more investors need to crunch the numbers.

If AI data center demand continues, DCAI growth persists, and Foundry losses continue to narrow, higher capital expenditures will be understood by the market as locking in capacity and advanced process windows in advance. For a company that wants to reclaim its leading position in manufacturing, without investment, rebuilding competitiveness is challenging.

However, if growth is only a phase rebound, or if customer introductions for advanced processes are slower than expected, capital expenditures will revert to becoming a valuation pressure. What damaged market confidence most in the past for Intel was the delays in advanced processes and insufficient returns on significant investments.

The cash flow metric also needs to be broken down. Intel's operating cash flow for the second quarter was $7.006 billion, remaining positive after deducting gross capex, but the adjusted free cash flow reported by the company was -$8.419 billion, mainly influenced by partner contributions and other items. To say in general terms that "free cash flow turned positive" can obscure the differences in metrics.

Capital Returns Determine the Quality of the Turning Point

This financial report is sufficient to change an old judgment: Intel has not been entirely left behind in the era of AI infrastructure. Its data center business has accelerated again, foundry business losses have narrowed, and the guidance for the third quarter also gives the market reason to continue observing.

However, what the market needs to verify is whether these improvements can transcend the capital expenditure cycle. The annual investment of over $20 billion indicates that Intel is betting not on small repairs, but on the simultaneous establishment of advanced manufacturing, AI servers, and external foundry.

If subsequent financial reports show that DCAI growth does not significantly slow down, that Foundry losses continue to narrow, and that leads for advanced process customers convert into clearer mass production arrangements, only then may Intel's valuation anchor shift from "cyclical rebound stock" to "AI infrastructure participant."

Conversely, if cash continues to be consumed by capital expenditures while foundry customers remain at the narrative level, this after-hours revaluation may be reclassified by the market as a report rebound amplified by the AI cycle. Whether Intel is at a turning point will ultimately depend on whether growth can afford its manufacturing ambitions.
