Going abroad is not a crime or an escape, but rather an effort to avoid causing trouble for our party.
I have shared many experiences and stories about coming to Singapore, and I have also openly mentioned my reasons for leaving mainland China. The primary reason is to ensure that Chipmunk can receive an education. Chipmunk not only has the potential to fall behind academically but is also quite active, and during our time in Shanghai, he was often asked to have his parents come in for discussions, which is one of the reasons I decided to take him away.
The primary school in Shanghai, which has a history of 114 years, does not have recess. After class, students cannot move around freely and cannot leave the classroom. There are designated personnel to record bathroom visits, and frequent bathroom trips can lead to parental involvement. Students cannot casually chat with classmates after class and cannot run around the classroom, among other restrictions.
Chipmunk's future is indeed my top priority, and the choice to move to Singapore is largely due to the fact that Singapore's education is at the forefront in Asia. Singapore is a great place that blends Eastern and Western cultures very well.
Aside from Chipmunk, my "career" is also a significant consideration. After I disbanded the research and development team in Shanghai in 2023, I started thinking about what path I would take next. Being older, I probably wouldn't find anyone willing to hire me again, and at that time, I had already begun writing on X. As is well known, X requires a VPN, and while Shanghai has been relatively lenient, it is still against regulations, and it has now become illegal.
Moreover, my primary business revolves around cryptocurrency, whether it is incubation, investment, or trading. Cryptocurrency is likely to be an inseparable part of my life moving forward, and cryptocurrency in China is not compliant, not to mention the issues surrounding fund inflow and outflow.
Of course, the last reason is the pandemic, which I won't elaborate on; friends in Shanghai understand this.
It was precisely because of these three reasons that after the restrictions were lifted in 2023, I began looking for a suitable place to stay. During Token2049, I came to Singapore for the first time and decided on Singapore spontaneously. As a result, I was introduced to the elder @Trader_S18 by @Bqlsj2023, who is one of the first people from Huobi to venture abroad and came to Singapore early on. He introduced me to many aspects of Singapore's culture and customs.
The house I now live in was helped in finding by the elder and his family. I fell ill for the first time in Singapore and was nearly burning up; it was the elder who took me to the hospital. At that time, his wife was already six months pregnant. This is also why I am very willing to help friends who come to Singapore; I was once helped, and I hope to pass on this warmth.
I digress; the essence of going abroad is that I want to do what I am good at. If I cannot do it completely on the mainland, it feels like being a thief every day—worried about using a VPN, concerned about KYC, anxious about fund inflows and outflows, and even worried about writing. But these are things I must do; otherwise, how can I support my family? So, for me, faced with the situation, there is only one conclusion: going abroad.
I never believed that the outside world is more exciting or that the moon is rounder outside, but after stepping outside, I find that I only need to focus on what I am good at every day. I can freely publish articles on X and openly exchange U for new currencies, dollars, and yuan. I can declare my taxes honestly, and if I wish, I can freely buy and sell cryptocurrencies. I can trade U.S. stocks anytime, and as long as I want, I can short or go long on oil.
I don't have to worry every day about new regulations or guidelines issued by China; I simply interpret them based on my understanding.
I am not saying that going abroad is necessarily good or essential, but if you are like me and are prepared to walk this road to the end, then the sooner you go abroad, the lower the overall cost will be.
