The world is at risk of falling into a global food crisis

The UK government has warned that Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz could lead to millions facing hunger.

The World Food Program estimates that if the conflict between the United States and Israel with Iran continues, nearly 45 million people could face acute food insecurity.

The Foreign Office is hosting a major aid summit in London and is formulating a new UK development response strategy for countries facing a food security crisis and are on the brink.

"The world could unwittingly be stepping into a global food crisis, and we cannot allow tens of millions to go hungry because Iran has seized an international shipping route," said Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

"This is why we need to act together in response."
