The situation of Websea this time is very similar to that of the JPEX exchange, which closed its doors during the Token2049 event in Singapore in 2023. JPEX was the platinum sponsor of the Token2049 Singapore event and had set up an enormous booth on-site.
On September 14, the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission publicly named and warned JPEX as an unlicensed illegal platform, advising investors not to use it. After the warning was issued, the JPEX booth was completely deserted that evening, with all staff evacuated.
Subsequently, JPEX quickly announced a suspension of all new transactions (stopping new orders from September 18), and there were severe issues with withdrawals, ultimately leading to the platform effectively shutting down and running away.
This incident later evolved into one of the largest cryptocurrency fraud cases in Hong Kong's history, involving several local influencers and KOL endorsements. The Hong Kong Police Commercial Crime Bureau intervened in the investigation, and multiple arrests were made.
