In extreme environments, what is taken away first is not freedom, but certainty; you do not know what will happen tomorrow, do not know when this will end, do not know how people outside will view you, and do not know if you can return to your original life.
This unknown is more tormenting than the suffering itself; but it is also in such places that a person's underlying vitality can be forced out.
What I understand as the strong adapting to their environment is not resigning to fate—
but rather that under the worst conditions, one can still attempt to establish a bit of order, a bit of connection, a bit of learning, a bit of creation, a bit of a sense of control.
And then still choose to be oneself in extreme environments!
