🧐Let's talk about: What exactly is Mythos, and why is the crypto industry so frantically vying for testing permissions? Will it be bearish for $ETH in the future?
This week, we'll explore a topic that many people have been asking about;
This week’s topic is Anthropic's latest and most advanced AI model, Mythos (full name Claude Mythos Preview);
Its core capabilities are particularly explosive, especially in the fields of cybersecurity and code auditing: it can autonomously discover and exploit zero-day vulnerabilities.
Now let's discuss 👇
1️⃣ What exactly is Mythos?
You can think of it as a super hacker AI, capable of achieving a depth and scale in software security testing that humans and traditional tools could never reach.
But because it is so powerful and dangerous, Anthropic does not dare to release it publicly.
They initiated a controlled early testing program called Project Glasswing, providing limited testing permissions only to a select few rigorously vetted tech giants, financial companies, and important open-source projects, specifically for defensive security scanning and vulnerability remediation.
2️⃣ Why is the crypto industry so frantically competing for it?
The reason is very pragmatic and critical: the attack surface of crypto infrastructure is massive and the value is extremely high.
Exchanges, wallets, custodial services, DeFi protocols, smart contracts, open-source crypto libraries are almost all code-driven, and many are open source.
Once breached, the money can be directly laundered on-chain and is irreversible.
With an AI of Mythos's level, attackers are highly likely to acquire similar capabilities in the future. The time taken to discover vulnerabilities → write exploits → launch attacks could shrink from days/weeks to just minutes or hours.
Therefore, the crypto industry must act preemptively, using the strongest AI to scan and fix their systems first, and then fortifying their systems to the strongest state; otherwise, they will be passively hit, potentially resulting in losses of hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars, or even the entire project could be destroyed.
3️⃣ Now let's discuss the impact on the ETH network:
Mythos is not a weapon directly targeting Ethereum, but it poses a substantial security threat to the entire crypto/DeFi ecosystem, of which Ethereum is the absolute powerhouse.
I have mentioned before that Mythos will only kill low-quality DeFi, which would actually be beneficial for Ethereum.
I know what everyone is worried about; this narrative suggests that the era of AI hackers is arriving early. If vulnerabilities related to Mythos are leaked or malicious parties gain similar capabilities, high-value protocols on Ethereum (like Lido, Uniswap, Aave, etc.) could become prime targets.
This is somewhat similar to the previous narrative about quantum computing threatening BTC, but this time it’s "AI threatening DeFi,"
However, in reality, the Ethereum ecosystem has innate advantages: multiple clients (Geth, Nethermind, etc.), upgrade mechanisms (L2, hard forks), and the EF has recently been subsidizing security audits (up to 30% of costs).
Using tools like Mythos, auditing can achieve unprecedented depth, effectively providing the entire on-chain infrastructure with a super vaccine.
More broadly, I believe that if TradFi (traditional finance, banks, custodial services) is attacked by AI, funds may accelerate towards on-chain solutions; Ethereum, as the base of DeFi, will directly benefit.
Some crypto Twitter users even regard this as a “new bull case”—the less secure traditional finance becomes, the more valuable ETH becomes.
Therefore, my view is that the long-term narrative of AI + Ethereum (Vitalik has repeatedly discussed how AI agents need Ethereum as a settlement layer) will be reinforced by this incident, not weakened.
