It should be 10 PM Beijing time tonight, and it is not the entire Strait of Hormuz that is blocked, but rather all ships entering and leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas. For ships merely passing through Hormuz, but not heading to Iranian ports, the U.S. position is that they will not be intercepted.
Essentially, it is a blockade targeting Iranian ports, with the main goal being to block the "shadow fleet" under the Iranian system, which is the true cash cow for Iran's oil exports, sanctions evasion, and foreign exchange repatriation. Blocking it is equivalent to grabbing Iran by the throat.
Iran exports about 2 million barrels of crude oil daily, and a significant portion is reliant on the shadow fleet or shadow shipping practices, with daily earnings estimated between 170 million and 190 million dollars.
