When I was a child, the relationship between China and Japan was very friendly. During my middle school years, I studied at Shenyang City No. 39 Middle School (Fengtian Mantetsu Affiliated Middle School). This school was built by the Japanese, with red brick buildings and classrooms that all had wooden floors. The sports facilities were very well-equipped, with two standard-sized soccer fields, an indoor gymnasium, and a swimming pool (unfortunately, I only used it once during my first year and it was closed afterward). At that time, I often saw Japanese alumni who had attended this school visiting their alma mater, touring it, and supporting it. They also held exchange meetings with us current students, and the atmosphere was very harmonious. Shenyang and Sapporo, Japan are at the same latitude, so they were also sister cities. Back then, there was no term like "Nanjing Massacre," and every year Japan provided various vaccines to China free of charge. There was no atmosphere of hatred toward Japan at all. I once asked the school guard, an old man:
"Are the Japanese bad people?" The old man responded:
"The Japanese are not bad. They had strict military discipline and were very orderly. Rather, the bad ones are the '二鬼子' (two devils). The '二鬼子' refers to the Kwantung Army composed of Koreans. It was the unit that Park Chung-hee belonged to. That '二鬼子' oppressed the Chinese!"
