I will first compare the current shortage occupation lists of several mainstream immigration countries. Those interested can take a look:
1. Skilled Trades
Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, air conditioning refrigeration, construction technicians. This needs no explanation; it’s the most basic of basic positions.
The Australian immigration core list clearly includes electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and chefs.
Canada will continue to prioritize skilled trades immigration in 2026.
New Zealand will include 10 skilled trades in the work-to-residency pathway by 2025.
Germany’s official shortage occupations and blue card shortage categories include skilled trades and transportation.
The current UK immigration list includes welders, bricklayers, carpenters, etc.
Of course, these trades mainly involve manual labor, and most friends might not want their children to work in these fields. However, these areas are the easiest to obtain skill certification, and systematic learning can be achieved even while in the home country.
2. Licensed Medical Positions
Nursing, doctors, dentists, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, radiology, laboratory, speech therapy, these are in high demand and represent a long-term gap in an aging society.
Canada's 2026 medical and social services category clearly covers dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, radiology, laboratory positions, etc.
Germany’s shortage occupations and blue card shortage range also include doctors, dentists, and pharmacists.
However, the challenge of these professions lies in the extremely difficult learning process, especially in nursing, which not only requires five years of university but also many qualifications in the medical field, making those who can pass the exams rare.
PS: If you obtain a nursing certification, you are basically set for life. For a while, many friends going to the U.S. were studying this major, but the difficulty is very high.
3. Information Technology and Cybersecurity
Software engineering, cybersecurity, system architecture, development operations, etc.
Canada's 2026 STEM category clearly includes cybersecurity.
The Australian immigration core list includes software engineering, cybersecurity engineering, development operations.
Germany lists information technology as a shortage occupation.
This category is basically a primary source of employer-sponsored visas in the West, and comparatively it may be the least difficult.
In addition to these three major directions, there are also teachers, engineering, and transportation-related positions, but they require very specialized skills.
