The "3Q War" was Tencent's most difficult moment and also the time when Tencent had the worst reputation. They copied whatever was popular, killing originality, with the 200 million users of the online game company, Lianzhong, being a typical example.

Even Jack Ma encouraged college students to start businesses and not to "run away at the sound of news." Some investors only funded projects that Tencent could not enter and copy.

The most well-known magazine used "Damn Tencent" as its cover. Pony Ma, being an engineering guy, did not understand at first and called a meeting with executives. The atmosphere was tense, and Pony Ma's first question was: "How can they insult us?"

During the 3Q War, the criticism against Tencent reached its peak. QQ issued the "toughest decision," stating that users had to either delete QQ or use 360, which led to a wave of backlash.

Objectively, it was indeed a moment of life and death for Tencent. If they did not resist, everything from data to entry points would be controlled by 360; but upon resistance, they realized that despite their size, they were very unpopular—just like everyone was criticizing them.

However, under this circumstance, both Tencent and Pony Ma experienced the most significant transformation in their lives.

Shortly after the twelfth anniversary celebration, Pony Ma sent an internal letter advocating against anger, stating that rage would only burn oneself. He also mentioned two reflections that influenced Tencent for more than a decade afterward:

"In the past, we always thought about what was right. But now, we think more about what can be recognized."

"Tencent's dream is not to become the strongest or the largest company, but to be the most respected company."
