Today is the weekend, and #AI regularly sends me last week's crypto weekly report. Upon seeing this message, I almost spilled my coffee—Vanguard has included $SEI in its ETF that manages $11 trillion.
As we all know, Vanguard is not an ordinary asset management company; its style is "extreme conservatism + extreme long-term." It is not the type of hedge fund that speculates on coins or chases trends, but rather the "big steward" of American citizens' pensions, 401(k)s, and retirement accounts. The amount of money it manages is greater than the annual GDP of most countries; $11 trillion is equivalent to putting the entire German economy into one fund, and then some.
Now that it has included $SEI in its ETF, it clearly indicates that $SEI is no longer viewed as a "speculative crypto asset," but rather as a "configurable infrastructure-type alternative asset." In fact, Vanguard is not betting that the price of $SEI will increase tenfold; it is directly signaling that "$SEI chain can run real things and can carry real-world financial flows, and we are willing to include it in the long-term investment portfolios of ordinary people."
This is a different logic from when BlackRock or Hamilton Lane put #RWA on $SEI; the former is "institutions using #SEI to do things," while the latter is "Vanguard telling tens of millions of ordinary people: SEI is worth holding long-term."
So many people might ask, why $SEI? Why not another L1? I think one thing is certain: it has been focused on compliance, not chasing trends or creating hype, and what it does is particularly "non-crypto."
It basically does not engage in memes, does not do airdrops, and does not participate in liquidity mining; instead, it allows Robinhood's 25 million retail investors to stake #SEI with one click; it enables #Kalshi's prediction market to run on its own chain, allowing ordinary people to bet on "when the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates" using USDC; it collaborates with Chainlink, Monaco, and Carina Finance to work on cross-chain, compliance, anti-MEV, and high throughput—all of which are "certainty" that traditional finance cares about. This may be the key reason why Vanguard chose #SEI! 🧐
