The world's largest social platform Telegram has a major update, and your graphics card can mine TON now.

Yesterday, Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced on Twitter that their decentralized privacy computing network Cocoon has officially launched.

The Cocoon network consists of three parts:

Client: Initiates work requests to the proxy and pays the proxy once the request is completed.

Proxy: Routes work requests to work nodes. The proxy is protected by TEE and will select suitable nodes for routing based on the device model, load, and reputation of the work nodes. It will collect fees from the client and pay the nodes, which will also take a certain commission. Telegram plans to allow anyone to run their own proxy in the future, making the Cocoon network fully decentralized.

Work Node: Executes AI inference requests in a TEE-protected virtual machine and receives payment for the requests from the proxy after execution is completed.

In other words, anyone can become a work node and earn $TON through their own GPU. Cocoon allows GPU owners to contribute AI computing power to the decentralized network on TON. By running the Cocoon protocol stack on a GPU server that supports TEE, they can provide private, verifiable AI model execution and transparently receive $TON payments for each processed request.

Pavel Durov stated that some AI-related features in Telegram, such as message translation, are partially supported by Cocoon. He also mentioned features like speech-to-text and summarization within Telegram, indicating that Cocoon already has practical applications from the start and believes that Telegram mini-programs will bring more usage demand to the Cocoon network in the future.

Compared to the previously hyped Telegram gift NFTs in the crypto space, Cocoon seems more like a decentralized AI computing network built by Telegram that integrates blockchain and $TON as a payment method, addressing the functional needs within Telegram. It is unlikely to issue tokens, and the hype potential is limited. However, this project may reflect a long-term trend where people are increasingly concerned about privacy issues when using AI, especially regarding exposing data directly to centralized AI companies. In the crypto space, we have already seen more privacy-focused projects promoting "data sovereignty protection." Currently, the total TVL of the Cocoon network has reached approximately 4487 TON, with 30 work nodes, 18 proxies, and 12 clients, which is data from just over a day after the official launch, still very early.

With the support of practical application needs from Telegram's built-in features and TON incentives, the existence of TON incentives also reduces the expectation of issuing tokens. Whether the Cocoon network can develop at a different pace from crypto computing projects in the crypto space will require time to test.
