According to the latest developments, the U.S. government shutdown (which has lasted for 40 days) is nearing its end, but it has not yet fully concluded. The Senate passed a procedural vote on the evening of November 9 (U.S. time) with a vote of 60-40, advancing the H.R. 5371 continuing resolution bill that had already been passed by the House, with the support of 8 Democratic lawmakers.
The bill includes: full-year funding for certain agencies (such as the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Agriculture), temporary funding for other agencies until January 30, 2026, full back pay for federal employees during the shutdown, an extension of SNAP food assistance funding until September of next year, and a commitment to vote on healthcare subsidies in December.
However, the shutdown has not yet completely ended, and the following processes are still needed, although the resistance to these processes is smaller.
It will be formally sent to the House. The Senate's final vote is expected to take place tomorrow to confirm the bill text.
The House's approval is anticipated, with the House expected to vote on the Senate version the day after tomorrow. Since the Republicans control the House, this step is expected to go smoothly, but minor modifications cannot be ruled out.
The President's signature is required; President Trump needs to sign the bill into law, which is expected to be completed quickly (he has expressed support for ending the shutdown).
If everything goes smoothly, the government shutdown could be resolved by Wednesday, lasting a total of 43 days.
