Protecting Your Eyes: A Brief Science Talk — Also Discussing the Only Shortcoming of iPhone and "Proper" Corporate Culture
- Important Parameters for Eye Protection
1.1 PMW Dimming, a Major Concern
Many people use their phones in low light, such as before bed, and if the phone's flicker adjustment is poor, it can lead to rapid eye fatigue.
If PMW dimming is very high, it can reduce flicker; generally, a value above 1800 is very friendly to the eyes. Here are some comparisons:
OPPO FIND X8 is 3840HZ
XIAOMI is 1920mhz (low brightness)
iPhone 16 is 480
According to feedback from two friends I forced to switch from iPhone to OPPO, "It really feels much more comfortable for the eyes."
The good news is that Apple has also realized this and made improvements in the iPhone 17 by adding an option to turn off the "PMW dimming function." According to official statements, turning it off will reduce display performance — a sort of alternative solution.
1.2 Long-term Harm of Blue Light to Vision
Therefore, all phones have software to prevent blue light, known as eye protection mode, and a further option is hardware blue light protection, which some models from OPPO, Xiaomi, and Honor have.
You can check if it has international eye protection certification, such as TÜV Rheinland Eye Comfort 4.0.
Many people have heard of blue light and know it is harmful, but they may not know the specific dangers.
First, it causes dry eyes and fatigue, especially at night; this is something everyone has experienced.
Second, it can lead to insomnia by inhibiting the secretion of melatonin, which is why scrolling on your phone before bed can make you feel more awake, even when reading novels. In contrast, using a Kindle or other e-ink screens is much easier on the eyes.
Third, there is potential retinal damage. Blue light can reach the macular area of the retina, and excessive exposure may cause photochemical damage, posing a certain risk of age-related macular degeneration.
Therefore, if you use an iPhone, even without hardware blue light protection, you can keep the eye protection mode on 24 hours a day, which is somewhat better. Applying a blue light filter can reduce exposure by about 20-40%.
However, if you have models from OPPO, Xiaomi, Huawei, etc., that have eye protection certification, they often feature hardware blue light protection, which fundamentally differs from the "eye protection mode + blue light filter" approach. It reduces blue light at the source without affecting display quality, while the eye protection mode + filter cannot precisely reduce blue light; it only relies on the filter's minimal "blocking" and mixes red and yellow light with blue light to lessen the perception.
- Changes in iPhone and OPPO
During the iPhone 4 era, a friend asked me what made it better than Sony. I listed many of its advantages, most of which Apple did not promote, such as the audio quality chip, which is the best, allowing for the highest performance when connecting to HIFI headphones.
At that time, buying an iPhone meant mindlessly choosing the best product, even the "back panel of the cabinet was the best."
OPPO and VIVO come from the same lineage as Duan Yongping, and their corporate culture places a high value on being proper and maintaining a calm mindset, unlike Xiaomi and Huawei, which have higher visibility. They focus on solid product development, opening offline stores (which Xiaomi learned from), and gradually capturing the market.
OPPO has invested a lot in eye protection, and the launch event for the new X9 promoted the slogan "Protecting your eyes even when the lights are off," along with some upgrades.
Of course, Xiaomi and Huawei, especially Huawei, should also be doing well in eye protection. I have a Huawei tablet, the MATEPAD AIR anti-glare version, which is indeed excellent; the screen quality is similar to reading paper, making it great for family members to watch shows.
Apple's current advantage is that no matter how the phone is designed, such as if some people are dissatisfied with its appearance, it doesn't have much impact. In fact, designs like Dynamic Island have been copied by domestic manufacturers, creating a deep moat. However, I hope they continue to push user experience to the extreme.
If features like dual WeChat accounts + eye protection return, I would continue to switch back to Apple, as Apple is unbeatable in terms of security.
