Last month, while I was in Japan, I received a lot of help from @_FORAB AB and his wife, who explained many aspects related to relocating to Japan. I was greatly inspired. Although Japan's tax policy is not very friendly towards cryptocurrencies, as there is a capital gains tax, if one can achieve a separation between work and residency, Japan is a very convenient place to live.
In terms of living costs, the prices in Japan are similar to those in Shanghai, with Tokyo being slightly more expensive, but not excessively so. Aside from a few items like fruits, everything is much cheaper compared to Singapore. I roughly calculated that my personal living expenses would only be about 40% of what I would spend in Singapore.
For a whole family, including children's schooling, this ratio could be reduced to about 30% of Singapore's costs. The biggest expense in Japan compared to Singapore would likely be transportation costs, but car prices in Japan are significantly cheaper than in Singapore. After a price cut, buying a car in Japan is not a big issue.
In terms of entertainment expenses, the difference between Japan and Singapore is not very large, but overall, Japan tends to be slightly cheaper. However, Japan has a major issue, as AB mentioned: there are still too few friends around, and Japan is a bit larger than Singapore, making it difficult to gather friends within half an hour. Additionally, there is the language barrier, which can be somewhat troublesome.
Nevertheless, Japan's current immigration policy is excellent, especially for families with children considering studying abroad. The cost-effectiveness of obtaining Japanese PR is very high. Compared to the opaque process in Singapore, Japan's PR or citizenship is a better option before obtaining PR in Singapore.
