Today I have a bit of a fever, and I woke up groggy thinking about not having done my homework. The first tweet I saw when I returned to my computer was this one from Teacher Fengmi, and I suddenly felt a sense of déjà vu. A few days ago, I was chatting with my parents about this issue. I thought about it, and if it were me, had I not taken the path of cryptocurrency, my best outcome would still be struggling in the gaming industry.
But at my age, unless I start my own business and succeed, I doubt any company would want to keep me. However, starting a business is not that simple. Following the conventional path, at most, I would just pay off my mortgage and car loan. Although I might not be in debt, it’s highly likely that I wouldn’t be making any money either.
Given my personality, I might do two things: drive for Didi while writing online literature. I actually drove for Didi back in 2014 or 2015 for about a month. Initially, it was to experience it, and I heard it was very profitable, so I specifically bought a cheap phone. Every day after work, I would drive, and I also drove on weekends. After a month, I barely made back the cost of the phone.
Of course, because my license plate was from another city and not a Shanghai plate, I couldn’t go on the elevated roads during peak hours, which reduced my income a bit. Plus, since it was a part-time job, I earned very little. However, if I really found myself without a job, driving for Didi might be a middle-aged person's last stubborn stand. I even asked a friend about it; now in Shanghai, if you drive for Didi full-time and only run airport lines, you can still net about 10,000 yuan a month.
This figure was about 15,000 yuan two years ago. Friends around me say that peers of similar age are either lying flat at home or driving for Didi. Some of my former colleagues from my younger days are not doing well either. Programmers from my previous company have seen their salaries decrease every year. The former CTO, who was once thriving, had an annual salary over a million, but now the base salary might not even reach 200,000.
It’s not that they don’t want to continue shining; it’s just that they can’t compete with the fresh graduates. The latter demand lower pay, do more work, think faster, and are more easily exposed to new things. Our so-called experience, while not worthless, is just that—so-so.
Not to mention in China, even in Singapore and Japan, many taxi drivers are middle-aged or older. There are even some over fifty still driving. So in terms of investment, I’ve developed my current personality, which may lack some aggressiveness. I can’t treat money like fun tokens to gamble with, but maintaining a more stable income to earn more stable money and keeping my assets in a state of steady appreciation is what’s most important.
If it were just me, I might be willing to take a gamble, but the term "middle-aged" often comes with family and responsibilities. Let’s encourage each other.
