Aptos Labs and Jump Crypto today jointly released Shelby, an independent hot storage network and protocol designed for continuous, high-frequency Web3 application scenarios. Shelby combines a high-performance node network, dedicated fiber backbone, and on-chain programmable architecture, aiming to provide decentralized storage support for real-time applications such as video streaming, AI data pipelines, social networks, and DePIN, while maintaining cloud-level performance and complete decentralization.

Currently, over 82.5% of global internet traffic comes from video and live content, and traditional cloud services struggle to meet real-time requirements, locking developers into closed systems. Shelby will provide a new on-chain pathway: achieving cloud-comparable performance through a decentralized hot storage protocol while ensuring all data streams are verifiable on-chain, allowing developers to build the next generation of applications without compromise.

Shelby is the result of deep collaboration between two major forces in the Web3 space, Aptos Labs and Jump Crypto. Several engineers from Aptos Labs previously worked on scaling platforms like Instagram at Meta and are now building consumer-grade blockchain infrastructure for Shelby to enable rapid coordination, flexible logic, and instant usability. Meanwhile, the Jump Crypto team, one of the most active infrastructure builders in the digital asset industry, leverages its experience in real-time systems and high-speed transactions to provide low-latency read/write and parallel data stream support for Shelby. By utilizing the economic model of Web3 and the speed of Web2 to achieve large-scale data services, Shelby integrates cutting-edge Web3 and Web2 technological advantages, promising to bring a new vertical in data storage to the market.

How to achieve Web2 performance while balancing the flexibility and economic model of Web3 has been a common challenge faced by leading projects. Decentralized storage has often meant "cold," slow, and static, suitable for archiving but difficult to meet real-time demands. Shelby addresses this by creating a new data primitive: a "hot," programmable storage system that supports streaming, native monetization, and can evolve with usage patterns. This will bring sub-second read speeds, enforceable access control logic, and dynamic pricing capabilities.

Shelby's Operating Mechanism

Shelby will operate on a network composed of high-performance servers worldwide, connected through a dedicated fiber backbone and supplemented by edge caching, achieving sub-second content access in large-scale scenarios.

Its architecture supports usage-based billing, token-based access control, tipping mechanisms, DRM rights protection, and permission management defined by smart contracts, all without compromising performance. Shelby coordinates based on Aptos main chain's 600 milliseconds final confirmation, 30,000 TPS throughput, and a gas fee of only $0.000005 per transaction.

Although Aptos is the native coordination layer of the protocol, Shelby is designed as a multi-chain compatible system and will support multiple mainstream ecosystems in the future, including Ethereum and Solana.

Aptos Labs CEO Avery Ching stated:

"Shelby represents the next chapter in decentralized infrastructure. It is not only faster and more flexible but also opens up a new category of real-time applications that can scale across chains, allowing developers and creators to truly control their data and economic models."

Jump Crypto Investment Head Saurabh Sharma stated:

"We aim to break the paradox of 'speed versus centralization' with Shelby. Shelby can achieve native scalable data high-speed transmission, on-chain permission logic, and content monetization, which is not only a breakthrough in the Web3 space but also redefines the entire internet."

Key Scenarios Supported by Shelby Include:

· Streaming Services: Creators can deploy pay-per-view live broadcasts or premium video membership services without cold storage delays;

· On-chain Data: A decentralized data source for indexing and block snapshots;

· AI Data Market: Training datasets are always available without frequent uploads/downloads, supporting version management;

· DePIN and Social Networks: Sensor data and user-generated content can be updated in real-time, empowering decentralized social interactions and on-chain metrics;

Web2 and Web3 projects such as Metaplex, Story Protocol, DoubleZero, and Pipe will explore Shelby in depth, reflecting the strong market demand for cross-chain real-time infrastructure and the continued influence of the Aptos ecosystem.

A developer-exclusive testnet (Devnet) is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2025, followed by a public test network. Shelby will support chains such as Aptos, Ethereum, and Solana, with plans to further expand to other modular ecosystems.

Shelby is not just a new entity; it represents a paradigm evolution in infrastructure, symbolizing the future of the integration of Web3 and Web2, a new data layer focused on speed, scalability, and controllable economic models.
