Original: “Judge says Craig Wright drags opponents into legal ‘hell’ in restraining order”
The High Court of England has issued a restraining order against computer scientist Craig Wright, prohibiting him from initiating further defamation lawsuits.
In a ruling on May 12, High Court Judge Edward Mellor stated that Wright's repeated false statements and aggressive legal actions have created a legal "hell" for individuals and developers in the Bitcoin (BTC) community, adding that Wright is attempting to "weaponize the legal system" to intimidate and suppress critics.
The judge further noted that his lawsuits have forced individuals into costly and time-consuming legal defenses, often based on fabricated evidence. As a result, the court issued a general civil restraining order preventing Wright from submitting any more civil claims or applications in the High Court.
The court emphasized that this strategy is a pattern of abusing the legal system to support his false claims of being Satoshi Nakamoto.
"Clearly, Dr. Wright has had substantial financial backing from the outset of his actions, and his defamation claims have deliberately created an unequal adversarial situation," Judge Mellor stated.
The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) filed a lawsuit in 2021 seeking a negative declaration and injunctive relief because Wright issued threats against its members, including crypto blogger Peter McCormack and Magnus Granath (also known as Hodlonaut).
His defamation claims "have subjected everyone to five years of personal hell," Mellor wrote, adding that these allegations "are part of a carefully orchestrated strategy by Dr. Wright and his supporters to establish the claim that Dr. Wright is Satoshi Nakamoto through an unequal contest."
COPA is a nonprofit community organization aimed at promoting the adoption and development of crypto technology and eliminating patents as barriers to innovation.

The threats received by its members "have had a serious chilling effect on the development and innovation of the cryptocurrency industry," Judge Mellor said.
"Dr. Wright's actions have not only affected the individuals he has sued," he continued. "They have also caused serious damage to innovation in an important technology sector."
In March last year, the High Court of England ruled that Craig Wright is not the author of the Bitcoin white paper, did not use the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, and was not involved in the creation of Bitcoin.
In July, Wright published a legal disclaimer on his website, explicitly stating that he is not the anonymous founder of Bitcoin.
In December last year, the Australian computer scientist was sentenced to one year of probation in the UK for contempt of court.
In nearly a decade of the "false Satoshi" controversy, Wright has also filed defamation lawsuits against Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Bitcoin pioneer Adam Back.
