"Dream of the Red Chamber" has many facets, one of which is the implicit clue that the Jia family, as a military meritocracy, faces an unyielding outcome in the late Qing Dynasty, where civil power overshadows military might.
The issues of the Jia family appear to stem from financial collapse, but in reality, they are the result of a complete decline in political power:
- The leader of the Four Great Families, Wang Ziteng, is introduced as the "Right Capital Inspector," which is a deputy position in the Censorate, a legitimate core high official role, with future opportunities to enter the upper echelons of the civil service (at the level of Minister). However, later in chapter 63, Wang Ziteng is "transferred to be the Governor of the Capital Garrison," indicating his marginalization.
Yuan Chun is the Imperial Concubine and was the Jia family's second pillar of support, but she passes away in chapter 76, leaving them without a support system.
Lin Ruhai sent his daughter to the Jia family, which was certainly a mutual understanding, nurturing the relationship between Baoyu and Daiyu from a young age. Lin Ruhai was a Salt Commissioner and a trusted confidant of the Emperor, with a promising future. Unfortunately, he dies in chapter 53, causing the Jia family to lose this investment. In fact, Lin Ruhai's death foreshadows the impossibility of a future between Baoyu and Daiyu.
The other two families of the Four Great Families are also unable to compete; the Xue family is wealthy but lacks real power, while the Shi family has long retreated to the sidelines.
The Lin family has not established a culture of scholarly pursuit; the male members of the family indulge in pleasure, including Jia Baoyu. The private school is rife with homosexual activities, indicating early signs of chaos.
