This topic is quite interesting.

AI summarizes in 5 seconds.

This topic is quite interesting, and many friends question whether $100,000 can last a lifetime. I want to share a very realistic perspective: not only can you live on this amount in an 18th-tier city of a certain major country, but even in a third or fourth-tier city, $100,000 is sufficient. Don’t dismiss this just yet; you might even be able to live for a long time without touching the principal.

$100,000 is equivalent to 730,000 CNY. Currently, the fixed deposit interest rate in Chinese banks can reach 1.7%. The interest on 730,000 CNY in a year is about 13,000 CNY, which is roughly 1,000 CNY per month. Doesn’t that seem like 1,000 CNY is completely insufficient?

According to survey data from the China Income Distribution Research Institute at Beijing Normal University, about 39.1% of the population has a monthly income below 1,000 CNY, which amounts to approximately 547 million people. Additionally, around 52.5 million people have a monthly income between 1,000 and 1,090 CNY. Therefore, the total population with a monthly income below 1,090 CNY is about 600 million, accounting for 42.85% of the national population.

Moreover, this monthly income refers to "disposable" income. Some might argue that this is just pure data manipulation and that one cannot truly live on such amounts. However, I have personally witnessed individuals who, after retirement, live on less than 1,300 CNY a month, managing not only to support themselves but also to care for a bunch of stray cats. Of course, this lifestyle is not easy; even going out for a bowl of Lanzhou beef noodles feels extravagant.

If we convert 1,000 CNY to 150 USD, approximately 46% of the global population lives on less than $5.50 a day. This means that about 3.4 billion people have daily living expenses below $5.50. When calculated monthly, this equates to about $165 in living expenses. Therefore, billions of people worldwide have a monthly income below $150.

Even in the United States, if one is willing to humble themselves and participate in food assistance programs, living on $2,000 a year might not be impossible.
