Health Section: About Cholesterol
Cholesterol may be the most misunderstood indicator or substance. Most people know that HDL is good (which is correct), while LDL is bad (which is debatable).
First, this chart shows that having too low LDL actually increases the risk of death. Recent studies, such as the one from Fudan University in the second chart, indicate that a lack of LDL can lead to dementia in the elderly, as LDL is an important component of cell membranes.
In fact, the real health risk comes from small dense LDL, which is associated with cardiovascular diseases.
However, this indicator is not typically included in standard blood tests. Fortunately, there are several indicators that can predict it: the higher your triglycerides, the lower your HDL, or the higher the ratio of the two, the more likely you are to have small dense LDL.
In terms of diet, in addition to reducing carbohydrate and sugar intake, it is also advisable to moderately control dairy products (milk, cheese, etc.). Of course, this is generally not a big issue for people in our country, as dairy consumption is not high. Eating meat and eggs will not cause an increase in small dense LDL.
