High Throughput EVM Public Chain Somnia Updates Litepaper, Multistream Consensus Becomes an Important Core

Somnia, a high-performance EVM-compatible Layer 1 optimized for large-scale consumer applications, has released its updated Litepaper. The new document shares key innovations of the project, including a new multistream consensus model.

The multistream consensus will support Somnia in achieving 400,000 transactions per second and sub-second block finality, aimed at supporting the next generation of large-scale consumer applications. Somnia is launching a $10 million ecosystem grant program designed to help promising developers connect with leading Web3 investors, including Mirana Ventures, Spartan Capital, and CMT Digital, to support developers in creating large-scale real-time applications across gaming, social platforms, the metaverse, and more.

The new Somnia Litepaper reveals the architecture that supports its high throughput and performance while maintaining a high degree of decentralization. This new design includes advanced compression technology, allowing Somnia to transmit data between nodes more efficiently than other blockchains, as well as a multistream consensus algorithm that helps the blockchain achieve sub-second block finality. Somnia also features a custom database, ICEdb, enabling it to achieve average read/write times of 70-100 nanoseconds. The blockchain is optimized for single-threaded sequential execution, outperforming traditional parallel models, especially during transaction-intensive periods.

The Litepaper also highlights the benefits for developers to deploy games and social applications on a scalable blockchain that can handle high transaction volumes while maintaining ultra-low fee environments.

Somnia is developed by the Virtual Society Foundation, an independent organization initiated by Improbable. Improbable is a UK startup that has been at the forefront of building virtual worlds for over a decade. The Virtual Society Foundation received initial funding support from MSquared, which raised $150 million in 2022.

Somnia has partnered with Yuga Labs to provide new uses for digital collectibles for holders of Kodas, Otherdeed Expanded, Bored Ape Yacht Club, and Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFTs. The launch of Somnia L1 will enable NFT holders to fully access on-chain gaming experiences and interoperable virtual experiences. NFT avatars can be used in MSquared virtual experiences, such as the official MLB virtual baseball stadium and concerts by Kpop artists—like TWICE on Kosmopop. Somnia has also developed Dream Builder, a set of tools that allows users to turn their creative visions into reality, from converting 3D files into interoperable metaverse objects to building immersive worlds and game-like experiences.

The performance characteristics of the Somnia blockchain will ultimately enable more logic currently existing off-chain to be moved on-chain, which is particularly important for gaming, social platforms, and other large-scale consumer applications. Somnia's high-performance blockchain can also improve trading by creating on-chain limit order books, providing users with a centralized exchange experience while ensuring the security of a decentralized blockchain, which is attractive for DeFi applications.

Unlocking these new use cases, along with other yet-to-be-imagined applications, will drive the mass adoption of blockchain and Web3, with Somnia becoming the optimal technical choice for these use cases, making it the obvious choice for developers and creators.

About Somnia

Somnia is the fastest and most cost-effective EVM Layer 1 blockchain, capable of processing over 400,000 transactions per second with sub-second finality.

Somnia's new multistream consensus technology achieves sub-second block finality and higher transaction throughput. Sequential execution and compression algorithms effectively handle high-density scenarios, increasing data transmission between nodes by 10-20 times. The new custom database, IceDB, achieves read/write times of 70-100 nanoseconds, reducing transaction costs to less than a cent. This makes it an ideal platform for building large-scale, real-time applications across gaming, social, metaverse, finance, and other fields, serving millions of users, all on-chain, making EVM more efficient than ever before.
