The Matrix: Important Infrastructure for the Large-scale Application of Telegram

The Telegram ecosystem has recently become a hot topic, with many people optimistic about its potential due to its over 900 million users. It is hoped that it can develop into a thriving web3 ecosystem similar to WeChat mini-programs.

The recent release of The Matrix, in my opinion, is an extremely important infrastructure for Telegram to achieve this goal.

It is a development toolkit jointly built by Nubit (@nubitorg) and Tomo (@tomosocial), which simplifies blockchain integration, enabling developers to develop web3 applications with the ease of building web2 applications. It can be said that this is a very important step for Telegram to move towards larger-scale applications.

The core task of web3 now is large-scale application. From a specific path perspective, it can be roughly divided into two types. The first is to build web3 applications and then attract web2 users to use them, such as the current socialfi track, Facaster, lens, etc. However, the problem is that the cost of user migration is very high, and issues such as privacy protection and content ownership are important, but not enough to attract a large number of users to migrate, which leads to slow user growth for these applications, which is simply not comparable to the user base of Facebook/Twitter.

The second type is to expand the use of web3 within existing web2 applications. We have also seen some cases, such as using NFTs as tickets, and so on. However, the big giants have not taken action, not because they do not understand the technology, but because blockchain conflicts fundamentally with their existing business models. For example, Facebook targets advertising based on precise user profiles. If privacy protection is implemented, their revenue will basically be gone.

Telegram, on the other hand, is the best breakthrough for large-scale web3. It ranks fourth in the world's instant messaging applications, second only to WhatsApp, WeChat, and Facebook Messenger, with over 900 million users. Telegram emphasizes user privacy, providing features such as end-to-end encrypted chats, anonymous accounts, and large groups, so it naturally has the genes of blockchain and also has the TON public chain. We are optimistic about the future of Telegram and believe that Telegram will not only have tap-to-earn projects like Notcoin and dogs, but will also see a thriving web3 application ecosystem similar to WeChat mini-programs.

The release of The Matrix can be said to be a timely and strategic move. At the current bottleneck of large-scale web3 application and the maturity of blockchain infrastructure, as well as the large-scale application of the Telegram ecosystem, it can help developers greatly reduce the complexity of blockchain integration and attract a large number of traditional web2 developers to enter. It can be said to be the foundation of foundations.

The Matrix has six core modules: Unified Wallet (Tomo Telegram SDK), Minichains, Universal Bridge, Nubit DA, Decentralization Kit (DeKit), and Minichain-as-a-Service (MaaS).

Unified Wallet

The Unified Wallet allows access to multiple networks using a single wallet. With the Tomo Telegram SDK, users can log in using common web2 methods, such as Google, Apple, Facebook, X (Twitter), GitHub, and Discord. It also supports multiple blockchains, with the following main features:

  • Comprehensive support: covering multiple mainstream blockchain networks such as Bitcoin, Solana, Ethereum, TON, and more.
  • Non-custodial design: users have full control over their assets, ensuring the highest level of security.
  • Social login: supports various social media account logins such as Google, Apple, Facebook, significantly reducing the usage threshold.
  • Fiat currency deposits and withdrawals: integrates fiat currency deposit and withdrawal functions, simplifying fund management processes.

Universal Bridge

Since it supports multiple chains, a universal bridge is necessary. It provides efficient and secure cross-chain transactions within the Matrix ecosystem and solves the asynchronous issues in traditional cross-chain communication. Its core functions include:

  • Synchronous message delivery: using a shared ordering protocol to achieve atomic transactions between multiple chains.
  • Cross-chain gas fees: supports seamless payment of transaction fees between different minichains.
  • Data consistency: uses Nubit DA to ensure data consistency across the entire ecosystem.

Minichains

Minichains are specialized blockchains tailored to specific application needs, aiming to ensure the best performance and security within the Matrix ecosystem. These minichains provide a flexible, scalable, and independent environment for various decentralized applications (dApps), while settling on major Layer 1 networks such as Ethereum and Bitcoin.

By allowing developers to customize minichains according to application requirements, minichains ensure efficient resource utilization, minimize redundancy, and enhance performance. This modular approach not only enhances security by isolating each application's blockchain but also simplifies the upgrade and maintenance process. As more minichains are deployed, they build a strong and interconnected ecosystem within Telegram, each optimized for its specific use case, promoting innovation and specialized dApp development.

Nubit DA (Data Availability)

As blockchain networks expand, data management becomes crucial. Nubit DA is the core pillar of data availability within the Matrix, providing a scalable and trustless layer for all minichains. The system consists of:

  • Validators: responsible for proposing and validating blocks.
  • Full storage nodes: ensuring reliable data storage.
  • Light clients: verifying data availability through sampling.

Decentralization Kit (DeKit)

Decentralization Kit (DeKit) is a developer toolkit based on the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture, dividing applications into three interconnected components—model, view, and controller.

DeKit aims to simplify the integration of decentralized features into Telegram applications, making it more user-friendly for both web2 and web3 developers. This architecture is particularly suitable for web2 developers familiar with frameworks like WeChat mini-programs, helping them transition more smoothly to web3 development. DeKit simplifies ledger management, user interface development, and smart contract logic through an easy-to-use API, enabling developers to quickly launch and expand their minichains without worrying about the complexity of underlying technologies.

Minichain-as-a-Service (MaaS)

Minichain-as-a-Service (MaaS) turns blockchain deployment into a task that anyone can accomplish.

  • Visual configuration: set blockchain parameters through an intuitive interface.
  • All-in-one service: integrates all necessary blockchain infrastructure.
  • Low-code/no-code: enables non-technical individuals to participate in blockchain innovation.

The Matrix ecosystem provides a comprehensive and user-friendly web3 gateway for web2 users and developers through its innovative components. From the user-friendly unified wallet to the powerful minichain deployment platform, Matrix is redefining the accessibility and practicality of blockchain technology, paving the way for the next generation of decentralized applications.
