sUSDe earns money from perpetual swap funding rates, which are a series of continuous short-term futures contracts. Most perpetual swap funding rates reset every 8 hours.

The funding rate is based on the premium or discount of perpetual contracts relative to spot. If the options are priced at a 1% premium relative to spot in the previous 8 hours, the next funding rate will be +1%. If the funding rate is positive, longs pay shorts; if the funding rate is negative, longs are paid by shorts.

Ethena holds a perpetual swap airdrop position to lock in the dollar value of the ETH held. Therefore, if the funding is positive, Ethena will receive interest income. If it is negative, interest will need to be paid.
