The NFT market has been in a slump for a long time. Among the few "families" that persist in using NFT as their social media avatars, only CryptoPunks, BAYC series, Azuki, and Milady remain…
Wait, Milady???
In the Crypto world, Milady has always been considered the epitome of rebellious spirit, goth, performance art, and abstract spirit of deconstruction, expressing the characteristics of the small circle to the fullest. (See "Milady Before Musk's Call: The Ultimate 'Internet Psychopath'")
And it is such a project that is indifferent to the external world's politics, but is experiencing "internal turmoil" this week.
In the end, is it a matter of money and title?
On the evening of September 11th, Milady founder Charlotte Fang stated on X platform that a developer misappropriated approximately $1 million from the Milady official project Bonkler treasury and also took control of the code repository, demanding the team to hand over more funds and NFT reserves. Currently, the X accounts of miladymaker and remilionaire are under the control of this developer.
Charlotte stated that the relevant members have been identified and their responsibilities will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law. The minting of Bonkler NFTs has been temporarily suspended, and the Bonkler community treasury, contracts, and NFTs are all safe. Other series of NFTs under Milady's parent company Remilia have not been affected for the time being.
However, a few hours later, another founder of Milady, Sprite Bonkler💫 (Sprite), the creative director of Remilia and an artist, tweeted: "Charlotte is spreading a false narrative unrelated to reality, attempting to disclose his own dereliction of duty and misappropriation of Remilia funds before legal review and public disclosure. Three weeks ago, we wrote to Charles, attempting to get him to acknowledge that we are co-founders, to provide us with the equity we deserve in the company, and to demand that he return all the funds removed from the treasury. In response to our letter, Charles filed a lawsuit, incorrectly referring to us as 'independent contractors' and 'terrorists.' When Charles made these claims, he failed to provide any contracts or attach the numerous messages we received from him, which contradict our claims and his own. We welcome the opportunity to resolve this dispute in court."
In response, Charlotte stated: "Remilia does not have co-founders. From the beginning, I have had sole control over the funds and operations. Before establishing the limited liability company, I had sole control over the assets used to fund Remilia's operations, and they directly reached an agreement with me and were compensated from the funds under my control. The core team working on Milady and Remilio received income sharing and joined the company in regular positions, and these people never negotiated equity at that time or at any time. This lawsuit is due to the detention of company property before transferring all stablecoins and NFT treasuries of Remilia to an entity controlled by 5 parties. They threatened to disclose it first and refused to comply with the injunction or participate in private arbitration. I took action to freeze Bonkler to protect the community's interests. The developer has no right to retain ownership of the Bonkler contract. Jimbo did receive a letter of intent from a co-founder, but he refused at that time."
The two sides have conflicting statements. What is the background?
It is understood that the Milidy series was originally designed by "Sprite," and then Charlotte joined and established Remilia. The former is still responsible for graphic design, while the latter is responsible for marketing, publicity, and community building.
Apart from money and control, the mysterious real identities
Considering the trouble Charlotte has brought to the community before, this dispute seems to be within expectations.
Charlotte's true identity has already been "unboxed" by community members, and indeed, this name—Krishna okhandiarz—is found in the lawsuit copy issued by Charlotte, linked to the parent company Remilia Corporation LLC.
Digging further, WazzCrypto on X gave his speculation: not only can a namesake be found on LinkedIn, but various information—rare name, work experience in Nevada, IT background, remote work, etc.—can all be matched one by one, basically pinpointing the overlap of "two people." According to the work experience, Krishna okhandiarz worked at a company called Palantir.
What does Palantir do? An article published by Forbes in August 2013 wrote:
The biggest problem facing Palantir's business may be that "it helps clients see too much." After NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed the agency's massive surveillance, Palantir's tools have become the biggest fear of privacy advocates for data mining technology—Google-level products directly applied to government espionage activities.
In the modern world, it is not easy for people like Karp to become mavericks. Conversely, if tools like Palantir are in the hands of the government, it may be even easier for us to deviate from the norm.
And this is how Wikipedia describes the company:
Palantir Technologies is a publicly traded American company specializing in big data analytics. Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, it was founded in 2003 by Peter Thiel, Nathan Gettings, Joe Lonsdale, Stephen Cohen, and Alex Karp. The company's name comes from "The Lord of the Rings" and means "true seeing stone," described as an indestructible crystal ball used for communication and viewing events in other parts of the world.
As of 2013, Palantir's clients include at least twelve groups within the US government, including the CIA, Department of Homeland Security, FBI, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Marine Corps, Air Force, Special Operations Command, Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, among others. However, at that time, the US Army continued to use its own data analysis tools. In addition, according to TechCrunch, US intelligence agencies such as the CIA and FBI were first associated with Palantir software because their databases were previously "isolated."
Thus, performance art reflects reality—founders of non-mainstream communities indirectly help the government "control or arrest" non-mainstream individuals, giving a magical sense of "the enemy is at Honnō-ji."
What do you all think? What's next?
Returning to the conflicting statements of the two founders, industry insiders and community members have a strong desire to express their views on the team division, profit distribution, and brand positioning of NFT projects represented by Milady.
@vectorized.eth, who leads protocols such as Sound.xyz and erc721a.org, believes, "Compensation may be a very sensitive topic, especially in this field. It is difficult to judge whether enough compensation was obtained solely from the lawsuit before we get some specific numbers. Artists, marketers, and developers all play crucial roles in the success of the project. However, it must be understood that the company must strike a balance between profit sharing and reinvestment for business expansion. So it's not as simple as evenly distributing profits among all core members. If the compensation is considered too low, employees should seek other opportunities, unless there are non-compete clauses in their contracts. If the competition is unfair, do not disrupt. Just leave."
@_gabrielShapir0 stated, "From a legal perspective, Charlotte is very convincing and may win. Charlotte is a genius in community (cult) building and aesthetics, and has pushed the development of this field in many ways. But now the consensus has disappeared. Milady once stood in opposition to the narrative of 'BAYC receiving VC investment,' but is now exposed as a VC-backed commercial company. If Milady wants to survive, it must not betray the propaganda of internet anarchism and build a future that is not bound by non-corporate or individual worship."
A more cruel reality is that after the internal strife and turmoil of the founding team, the NFT project is like a loose sand, scattered at the slightest breeze.
In terms of short-term market feedback, according to Blur, the floor price of Milady is currently at 2.4121 ETH, down 15.31% in a single day and 27.27% in 7 days.
Even if the team reconciles later, can the scattered spiritual core of Milady be gathered again?
