Key Takeaways

  • Moonpay added Discover Network as its third major U.S. card brand alongside Visa and Mastercard.
  • Discover Network cardholders can now buy crypto across Moonpay’s 500 enterprise partners.
  • Moonpay serves 30 million customers in 180 countries and holds a New York Bitlicense.

The latest addition puts Discover Network alongside Visa and Mastercard in Moonpay’s lineup of supported U.S. card brands. Moonpay already processes payments through Apple Pay, Google Pay, Paypal, Venmo, bank transfers, and regional payment rails.

Discover Network cardholders can now buy and sell crypto across Moonpay’s network of more than 500 enterprise partners. That list includes wallets, exchanges, and applications that rely on Moonpay to handle the fiat side of crypto transactions.

Moonpay was the first crypto on-ramp to support Paypal and Venmo. The company frames the Discover Network addition as a continuation of that approach.

“Every payment method we add removes a reason someone doesn’t convert at checkout,” Richard Harrison, Vice President of Banking and Payments Partnerships at Moonpay, said in a release shared with Bitcoin.com News. “We’ve built Moonpay around a simple principle: every way people already pay should work for crypto.”

Harrison added that Moonpay was first with PayPal and first with Venmo, and called Discover Network the next step in that pattern.

Discover Network described the partnership as an extension of its own strategy to widen how consumers can pay.

“At Discover Network, our goal is to provide consumers with the flexibility to pay when, where, and how they prefer,” said Claudia Schaefer, Vice President of Strategic Client Management for Discover Global Payment Network. “Through our payment solutions, we empower businesses like Moonpay to deliver a consistently secure and seamless experience for their users.”

Moonpay was founded in 2019 and now serves more than 30 million customers across 180 countries. The company supports more than 500 enterprise customers spanning crypto and fintech, powering on-ramps, off-ramps, trading, crypto payments, and stablecoin infrastructure through a single integration.

Moonpay holds a New York Bitlicense and a New York Limited Purpose Trust Charter. The company also carries money transmitter licenses across the United States and MiCA authorization in the European Union.

For Discover Network, the deal opens a new use case for its cardholders at a time when crypto purchases through traditional card rails continue to grow. For Moonpay, it closes a gap against competitors that already support multiple U.S. card networks.

The expansion signals continued convergence between traditional finance (TradFi) payment infrastructure and crypto markets, with card networks increasingly treating digital asset purchases as a standard transaction type rather than a niche one.

Card-based crypto purchases have historically carried friction. Some banks decline crypto-related charges outright, and cardholders without access to a supported network have had to rely on bank transfers or third-party wallets to fund purchases. Adding Discover Network removes one more point where a transaction can fail before it starts.

Moonpay’s enterprise partners, which include wallets, exchanges, and fintech applications, benefit directly from the change. Each partner that embeds Moonpay’s checkout now inherits Discover Network support without building anything new on their end.

The timing also reflects a broader pattern among payment networks. As stablecoin activity and crypto trading volumes grow, card networks have moved to treat digital asset purchases the same way they treat any other retail transaction, rather than routing them through separate, higher-friction channels.
