Visa Crypto Labs has introduced Visa CLI, a beta command-line interface tool designed to let AI agents execute payments directly from the terminal, eliminating the clunky handoff between code and checkout pages.
The system allows bots, scripts and automated workflows to pay for services—think cloud compute, APIs or datasets—without human intervention. Specifically using tokenized Visa credentials embedded within a new Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). Instead of juggling API keys or pre-funded wallets, agents can request a service, authorize payment inline and receive delivery in a single interaction.

The tool leans on Visa’s existing stack—tokenization, fraud controls and authentication—while extending compatibility to emerging stablecoin rails. Still, the company is keeping expectations grounded: access is gated via Github, usage is limited and the product remains firmly in experimental territory for now.
Behind the slick demo lies a broader shift that both traditional finance and crypto firms are racing to capture. AI agents are quickly becoming economic participants, and the current payments infrastructure—built for humans clicking through browsers—simply doesn’t fit.
Visa’s move ensures its card network stnays relevant by embedding itself directly into machine-driven workflows, preserving its role in global commerce while adapting to automation. Meanwhile, crypto-native players are pushing programmable money and low-cost rails that better handle high-frequency, small-value transactions.
Open standards like MPP aim to bridge both worlds, letting developers choose between card payments or blockchain-based settlement without rewriting systems. The result is a convergence play: traditional finance brings scale and security, crypto brings flexibility and efficiency, and both are betting that the future economy will be run—at least in part—by code that pays for itself.
- What is Visa CLI?
