The Death of Crypto Twitter? X Announces ‘Paid Partnership’ Label Program

X is moving to enhance transparency and trust on its platform.

On Sunday, Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, revealed that the company was implementing the Paid Partnership labels program to help users disclose their affiliations with potential partners sponsoring their posts.

Bier stressed that this new program would help the platform provide “an authentic pulse on humanity.”

On social media, he stated:

“While we want to encourage people to build their businesses on X, undisclosed promotions hurt the integrity of the product and lead people to distrust the content they read on X.”

Furthermore, he clarified that this new function allows users to comply with regulations and maintain their transparency with their readers.

The Paid Partnership label will not affect the reach, impressions, or algorithmic performance of each post. According to Grok, each post is “treated exactly like any other organic one, including full eligibility for Creator Revenue Sharing from verified impressions.”

Some believe that this new function could damage the credibility of crypto key opinion leaders (KOLs), who will now have to disclose their relationship with companies behind the tokens and products they claim to promote on their own free will.

Another unclear issue is the enforceability of this new feature, and what will happen if the platform finds out that users are not labeling their posts as sponsored. As X relies on users’ reports to power this new feature, some are concerned it could be weaponized to target other users for any purpose.

Reflecting on these concerns, X account Decensored News asked:

“Will X investigate? … Will X ever ban or otherwise punish a user just based on reports, without investigating and directly confirming yourselves that it is indeed a paid promo?”

Nonetheless, Bier is sure about the measure’s impact, as he highlighted that “creator shame Olympics” would start the day after its implementation.
