The acting chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Caroline Pham, has called for nominations for a chief executive officer to fill a seat on a committee that discusses policy, including policies related to digital assets.
Pham stated in a notice on Tuesday that the CFTC will accept nominations for the "CEO Innovation Committee" until December 8, and referenced the agency's previous efforts to regulate digital assets, including its "crypto sprint" initiative, the crypto industry forum, and progress in Congress on market structure legislation. The acting chair indicated that the committee will focus on the CFTC's "expanded mission in cryptocurrency and prediction markets."
Pham said, "The CFTC is ready to execute our mission in expanding markets and products, including cryptocurrencies and digital assets, while ensuring our markets remain vibrant and resilient, and protecting all participants. To kickstart this quickly, it is crucial for the CFTC to drive public engagement with the support of expert industry leaders and visionaries who are building the future."
It is currently unclear when the CFTC will officially establish the committee, but it may occur after Pham leaves the commission. The acting chair may soon be replaced by Michael Selig, an official from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), whose nomination as the committee chair is expected to go to a full vote soon. Many lawmakers will not return to Washington, D.C. until after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Although the Senate has yet to vote on Selig's nomination, his testimony last week before agricultural committee lawmakers hinted at how he might approach digital asset regulation if confirmed.
Selig stated that having a "patrol officer" is "crucial" for regulating the spot digital asset commodity market. He also mentioned that "having diverse perspectives is very valuable," referring to the lack of diversity in CFTC leadership—Pham has been the only commissioner for months, and as of Tuesday, the White House has not announced any additional nominations from President Donald Trump.
