Elon Musk finally launched his AI-driven, truth-focused Wikipedia alternative—Grokipedia—on Monday, following ongoing controversies with existing platforms over editing practices.
In a series of posts released on the X platform after the launch on Monday, Musk stated that Grokipedia is "completely open source, and anyone can use it for any purpose for free," with the goal of "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."
An X user has already noted differences in the article about George Floyd, an African American who was killed by police during an arrest in Florida.
The user pointed out that the first paragraph of the Grokipedia article highlights Floyd's extensive criminal record, while the Wikipedia article emphasizes that he was killed by a "white" police officer.
"We will never be perfect, but we will still strive towards that goal," he added.
The service was delayed by a few days as Musk paused the release to "clear propaganda content from Grokipedia."
Reportedly, it temporarily crashed after launch and then quickly came back online.
As of the time of writing, the website is fully functional, claiming to currently host over 885,000 articles.
While details about the specific processes behind Grokipedia remain scarce, at first glance, its AI integration marks a distinctly different organizational structure compared to Wikipedia.
In the case of Grokipedia, X's Grok AI seems to play a leading role in guiding and reviewing platform content, while Wikipedia relies on a combination of volunteer editors and automated tools.
Musk explained on Monday that users will be able to add or request changes to content on Grokipedia, with AI making the final decision.
"Grok has generated about 1 million articles using a large amount of computation. You will be able to request Grok to add/modify/delete articles, and it will either take action or tell you it won't do so and why," Musk wrote on X.
Musk has repeatedly criticized Wikipedia, claiming it leans towards leftist political and cultural positions.
Notably, while Musk's direct criticisms are not mentioned in Grokipedia's article about "Wikipedia," it does highlight studies indicating that the platform has leftist biases.
"Research analyzing the language and tone of articles reveals deviations from neutrality, with right-leaning politicians and topics being described negatively more frequently than their left-leaning counterparts, indicating that these policies have not fully mitigated the ideological bias arising from editor demographics and source selection," the article stated.
Meanwhile, Wikipedia's article about Grokipedia cites concerns from critics that Grokipedia may lean towards Musk's "far-right" views.
"Critics have highlighted entries that promote far-right views or lean towards Musk's perspectives. NBC News noted that Grokipedia's entry about Musk does not mention the gesture he made in January 2025, which many interpreted as a Nazi salute, while Wikipedia's article does mention it," the Wikipedia article about Grokipedia stated.
