Several Bitcoin supporters, including Jack Dorsey, are re-energizing the push for the privacy-focused messaging app Signal to adopt Bitcoin through a new initiative called "Bitcoin for Signal." This initiative aims to integrate Bitcoin with the Cashu protocol to enable payment functionality within the app.
"@Signalapp should use Bitcoin," Dorsey posted on X on Thursday, sharing a post from pseudonymous Bitcoin developer Cashu, who is the initiator of the Bitcoin for Signal campaign.
Bitcoin for Signal aims to implement Cashu's "Chaumian Ecash" solution, which integrates Bitcoin with the Cashu protocol to facilitate Bitcoin payments on Signal.
"Bitcoin belongs to Signal. Cashu ecash enables truly private Bitcoin payments in the world's most trusted encrypted messaging app," the Bitcoin for Signal website states.
The initiative is also supported by Bitcoin developer Peter Todd, who hopes Bitcoin can replace or at least expand Signal's current encrypted payment solution, MobileCoin (MOB).
"I've always wanted to try MobileCoin. But it has failed so thoroughly that I can't even buy any tokens. The Signal app needs to face reality and directly add Bitcoin support," Bitcoin developer Peter Todd stated.
Signal implemented MobileCoin in April 2021; however, the solution has been criticized for being overly centralized and having too few validators.
Pseudonymous Bitcoin developer Calle and Satoshi Labs co-founder Pavol Rusnak have also expressed support for Bitcoin for Signal.
Given that Signal has about 70 million monthly active users, successful implementation could make it an important platform for peer-to-peer Bitcoin transactions.
Dorsey has previously argued that if Bitcoin is only used as a store of value rather than for everyday payments—as envisioned by Satoshi Nakamoto—then Bitcoin will fail.
However, some critics point out that Bitcoin lacks integrated privacy features at its base layer, which may make it unsuitable for pairing with privacy-focused messaging apps.
"Jack, why use a completely public blockchain in private chats?" asked Aztec Network engineer José Pedro Sousa.
The digital rights advocacy page Techlore believes that Bitcoin could jeopardize Signal users' privacy.
Others suggest that Monero (XMR) and Zcash (ZEC) would be better alternatives.
While Cashu provides a privacy-preserving solution for Bitcoin, few such applications have been able to achieve large-scale success.
The push for Bitcoin support in private messaging apps comes as the EU considers a controversial "chat control" law that would require all messaging apps (including encrypted apps like Signal and WhatsApp) to provide private messages to authorities to detect child abuse material—effectively undermining end-to-end encryption protections.
Germany has refused to support the proposal, arguing that mass scanning of private messages is unconstitutional.
The vote has now been postponed, with another vote scheduled for early December.
