Latam Insights Encore: Bolivia Should Embrace Stablecoins Before Stablecoins Embrace It

Bolivia, a nation that was once barred from crypto, is now making headlines as its adoption levels skyrocket. Stablecoins, tokens whose value is pegged to the U.S. dollar, have taken the country by storm, allowing its citizens to use them as a dollar proxy in a currency restriction context.

The country has become home to industries that are focusing on bringing the convenience of stablecoins to retail users, leveraging USDT as a unit of account and a medium of exchange. Last week, Toyosa became the first company to accept stablecoins as payment for vehicles in Latam, marking a milestone for Bolivia.

The company, which is the exclusive dealer of Toyota, Yamaha, and several other brands, partnered with Bitgo and Towerbank to enable customers to pay for vehicles using USDT through QR codes.

This move highlights the usefulness of stablecoin assets in today’s troubled Bolivia and underscores the need for a dollar proxy that these assets might satisfy in the face of a weak fiat currency.

The Bolivian government should also embrace USDT and other stablecoins to free some of its reserves and use them for other objectives. Nonetheless, the government has rejected this idea before, blocking the use of cryptocurrency for making energy-linked acquisitions for liquidity and acceptance purposes.

While the country is also designing a CBDC for cross-settlement purposes, it is unlikely to have the same allure that stablecoins, backed by the might of the dollar, could have in international commodity markets.

Venezuela is an example of this, as reports indicate that the country is receiving a significant part of its oil settlements in stablecoins, leveraging these to navigate complex market restrictions and unilateral sanctions.

The message is clear: stablecoins are here to stay, and it is up to the Bolivian government to reap the benefits of these assets or keep facing dollar scarcity woes.
