The Ethereum Foundation has announced the establishment of a new research team focused on AI, aiming to combine the censorship resistance of blockchain with one of the hottest areas in technology.

Ethereum Foundation research scientist Davide Crapis stated on Monday that the new team will focus on developing an AI economy on Ethereum and building a decentralized AI technology stack for developers.

Crapis mentioned on X: "Ethereum makes AI more trustworthy, and AI makes Ethereum more useful. The more smart agent trading occurs, the more they need a neutral value and reputation layer. Ethereum benefits by being that layer, and AI benefits by breaking free from the lock-in of a few centralized platforms."

The Ethereum Foundation is staffing its newly created dAI team and is looking for an AI researcher and a project manager to drive coordination efforts.

The team will continue the initial work done on ERC-8004, a proposal co-authored by Crapis, Marco De Rossi, and Jordan Ellis, aimed at extending the AI agent-to-agent (A2A) protocol into a trust layer for discovering and interacting with AI agents.

The foundation will support projects seeking to transform Ethereum into a platform involving AI and human ecosystems, led by Crapis.

AI agents have become the focus of integrating blockchain technology and artificial intelligence. They are programs that make decisions and operate with minimal human oversight, executing transactions and operations on behalf of their programmers. Blockchains with programmable features, such as smart contracts, have become a haven for these programs.

AI can help manage settlements, which is the final step of transactions where assets are transferred between parties. According to blockchain analytics firm CryptoQuant, the daily smart contract call volume on Ethereum reached 12 million on Thursday, reinforcing the blockchain's role as a programmable settlement layer.

CryptoQuant stated: "Network activity is in expansion mode. Ethereum's total transaction volume and active addresses have reached all-time highs, highlighting the expanded adoption of DeFi, stablecoin transfers, and token activities."

According to a tech researcher, blockchain technology can compensate for the weaknesses of artificial intelligence by providing features such as decentralization, immutability, and authentication.

Various Web3 organizations are working to merge these two technologies. In 2024, Matchain announced the launch of its decentralized AI blockchain, and in February 2025, KiteAI announced the launch of an AI-driven blockchain within the Avalanche ecosystem.

According to Arunkumar Krishnakumar, head of institutional growth and RWA at Kamino Finance, AI agents and blockchain technology could redefine the digital economy.
