The Ethereum Foundation has released a roadmap aimed at bringing end-to-end privacy features to the Ethereum network, the first layer (L1) smart contract blockchain, and has renamed its "Privacy and Scalability Exploration" initiative to "Ethereum Privacy Stewards" (PSE).
PSE stated in a Friday announcement that its goal is to bring privacy solutions to the protocol, infrastructure, network, applications, and wallet layers, and has set several key objectives for the next 3-6 months.
These objectives include achieving private transfers, confidential voting, and privacy in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications through the development of the PlasmaFold second layer network.
The roadmap also proposes exploring workarounds for broadcasting personal data through remote procedure call (RPC) services, as well as implementing private identity solutions through zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, a method of verifying information without revealing the specific content of that information. PSE outlined its mission:
"We will work with protocol teams to ensure that any L1 changes necessary for robust, censorship-resistant, and intermediary-free privacy are implemented," the announcement continued.
Privacy has always been at the core of the cypherpunk spirit that birthed cryptocurrency, and as cryptocurrencies gain widespread adoption and attract government attention, the crypto community is increasingly concerned about the evolving methods of digital financial surveillance.
U.S. government officials are currently weighing regulations on the crypto industry and market, including potential monitoring measures to track participant activities.
The U.S. Treasury Department, led by Secretary Scott Bessent, is exploring proposals to add government identity checks to smart contracts, which has drawn strong opposition from the crypto community.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has repeatedly stated that privacy is a fundamental human right. In April, Buterin warned that in the digital age, transparency is more of a vulnerability than a feature.
Buterin stated that privacy is needed to protect individuals in an era of growing state power and large centralized corporations.
