Cryptocurrencies often make headlines in mainstream media for various misleading reasons, but behind them lies a story of innovation, resilience, and a community dedicated to building a safer financial future.
This week, the Clear Crypto Podcast, launched jointly by StarkWare and Cointelegraph, will delve into one of the most pressing and easily misunderstood issues in the digital asset space: crime within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
While mainstream media frequently associates blockchain with hacking, scams, and fraud, the reality is far more complex.
Guest Ari Redbord, Global Policy Director at TRM Labs and former U.S. federal prosecutor, discussed the gap in public perception with host Nathan.
"In fact, over the past two years, we have seen real scams in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, with losses amounting to about $50 billion," he stated.
For Redbord, the conclusion is clear: cryptocurrencies themselves are not flawed, but like any transformative technology, they attract opportunistic actors.
"Criminals are always early adopters of transformative technologies, and cryptocurrency and blockchain are no different," he said. "The promise of cryptocurrency is to enable cross-border value transfer at internet speed… but you know who else likes to move money faster and on a larger scale? Criminals.
However, it is precisely this transparency that can facilitate illegal uses that also provides investigators with powerful tools. He emphasized:
The podcast also explored how innovation can achieve a coexistence of privacy and security. Redbord pointed out that technologies like "zero-knowledge proofs, privacy pools, and digital identities" are excellent examples.
He noted that zero-knowledge proofs "allow us to prevent malicious actors threatening the ecosystem, like North Korea, while ensuring that legitimate users of this technology have the privacy they need."
Despite the challenges, Redbord remains optimistic:
