Polygon fixed the RPC node vulnerability, and network consensus has returned to normal.

The Polygon Foundation, an organization overseeing the development of Ethereum's Layer 2 scaling network, announced on Wednesday that consensus and finality functions have been restored after a software bug caused some nodes to lose synchronization with the blockchain.

The Polygon team stated in an update on Wednesday that they successfully executed a hard fork after the software bug interfered with some Remote Procedure Call (RPC) nodes. RPC nodes are used to relay information between applications and the blockchain layer.

According to Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal, the bug was caused by a "faulty" proposal from a validator, which pushed some Bor nodes used for transaction ordering and block production onto different network forks. Nailwal stated:

"The software bug continues to cause disruptions in the blockchain. As crypto protocols become more complex through hosted smart contract functionalities, file storage, and cross-chain interoperability, such bugs may become more frequent, thereby undermining the on-chain user experience."

The software bug on Wednesday did not halt block production on Polygon; rather, the issue affected node communication, leading to discrepancies between block production and the content relayed by the affected nodes.

Polygon faced a similar issue in July when the Hemidall mainnet—responsible for relaying communication between nodes for Polygon's Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism—stopped for an hour.

Like Wednesday's incident, block production on the network never ceased, and new blocks continued to be added to the chain via the Bor mainnet.

A Polygon spokesperson told Cointelegraph at the time that the partial disruption of the consensus layer was caused by a validator exiting the network.

After this unnamed validator exited, several RPC nodes had to resynchronize with the blockchain and re-establish communication to restore normal functionality to the Layer 2 network.
