Blockchain developers are sharing "horror stories" related to exorbitant bills received from Google Cloud BigQuery services, including one developer who was charged a total of $15,000 for executing three queries.
BigQuery is a serverless data warehouse provided by Google Cloud, designed to analyze large datasets using Structured Query Language (SQL) and equipped with built-in artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.
In a post shared by Mikko Ohtamaa, co-founder of the decentralized algorithm trading protocol Trading Strategy, an anonymous developer wrote: "I want to warn everyone that BigQuery is a huge scam, and every day you risk receiving absurd bills that could bankrupt you."
"The result was that I performed three BigQuery searches with query limits on Solana, each costing over $5,000," the developer wrote, adding that after complaining to Google support, the charges were reduced to $4,000 per query.
Several other participants in the crypto industry joined the discussion, accusing the predatory pricing mechanism of not allowing for monthly caps.
Ermin Nurovic, co-founder of the synthetic dollar protocol Flat Money, responded: "They deliberately do not let you set hard limits," and added, "Your Google Cloud functions get stuck in recursive loops, costing you thousands of dollars? Too bad."
In October 2023, Solana integrated with Google Cloud's BigQuery, allowing users to query Solana blockchain data, such as whale transactions or NFT sales, through Google Cloud's program, providing developers with a more transparent way to access archived blockchain data through BigQuery analysis.
Compounding concerns about the billing mechanism for BigQuery services, a second anonymous developer emerged, who was charged $5,000 for "selecting a query from the Solana table" that "accidentally" scanned several terabytes of data.
"Fortunately, at that time, our company had local contacts with Google, which helped us escalate the issue and obtain a refund," the developer wrote in the post shared by Ohtamaa.
Since the billing incident, the developer has not queried any blockchain data in BigQuery "without first checking the partitions."
The developer added that this pricing model makes it unimaginable for AI algorithms to rely on BigQuery services.
