Aave faced a phishing attack the day after its net deposits reached 60 billion USD.

Shortly after the decentralized liquidity protocol Aave announced that its net deposits exceeded $60 billion, security researchers reported that scammers launched a phishing attack targeting its users through Google Ads.

On Wednesday, Aave stated that it has become the first decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol to accumulate net deposits of $60 billion across 14 networks. According to Token Terminal data, Aave's net deposits have more than doubled over the past year, rising from approximately $18 billion in August 2024 to the current level.

The following day, Thursday, blockchain investigation firm PeckShield issued a warning to the cryptocurrency community about an ongoing phishing attack targeting Aave (AAVE) investors. Scammers posted phishing links to a fake Aave investment platform through Google Ads.

Once unsuspecting cryptocurrency investors click on these links, the website prompts them to connect their cryptocurrency wallets to its services.

Connecting a wallet address to the phishing site would allow scammers to access and transfer all funds stored in the wallet. Such transactions are typically irreversible and could result in permanent loss of funds.

While the losses from this ongoing attack have not yet been confirmed, the impact of the phishing attack is significant due to its spread through Google Ads.

Phishing scams trick users into revealing sensitive information, such as private keys, seed phrases, or login credentials, by impersonating trusted or well-known services.

Investors are advised to carefully check the website URL before engaging in any interactions, including depositing funds and connecting wallets. If attacked, investors should take specific steps to help minimize losses.

Cryptocurrency investors should immediately attempt to transfer funds from the compromised wallet to a secure wallet. They must also contact the service provider through official channels and revoke any wallet authorizations using services like Revoke.cash.

Additionally, the compromised wallet should never be reused to store or deposit funds, as scammers often monitor wallets and attempt to extract any remaining funds. Users should also try to disconnect their wallets from the phishing site.

Cointelegraph has reached out to Aave for comment and alerted them to the ongoing phishing attack.
