The Trump administration has signed an agreement with OpenAI to provide an enterprise-level ChatGPT platform for all federal agencies to "modernize" operations.

According to an announcement released by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) on Wednesday, under this agreement, all U.S. government agencies will gain access to the AI platform for a fee of $1 per agency, aimed at facilitating the integration of AI into workflow operations.

As the U.S. government's procurement office, the GSA stated that this public-private partnership "directly supports" the White House's AI action plan, which is a recently disclosed three-pillar strategy to establish U.S. leadership in the field of AI development.

Despite modernization efforts, critics argue that the ongoing AI race between nations could negatively impact privacy, data protection policies, censorship, narrative control, cybersecurity, civil liberties, and governance.

In 2023, the U.S. Space Force, a military branch, suspended the use of generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, within the organization due to cybersecurity concerns regarding sensitive data critical to national security.

Lisa Costa, the then Deputy Director of Technology and Innovation for the Space Force, stated that large language models (LLMs) and AI service providers need to fundamentally reform their data protection standards before these tools can be widely adopted by the military.

As the AI industry evolves, public concerns about automating government work with AI are also growing.

According to The Guardian, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson recently faced criticism for admitting to consulting AI in policy decision-making.

Prime Minister spokesperson Tom Samuelsson stated that Kristersson did not use AI to discuss confidential matters or sensitive information related to national security.

Large language models and AI chatbots ingest vast amounts of user data from the internet and conversations with users, which is used to train the AI.

The cybersecurity risks of storing information on centralized servers are the root of privacy concerns expressed by users, tech executives, and civil liberties activists.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently warned that ChatGPT conversations could be used as evidence against users in court. The CEO stated that AI conversations have no privacy protections and are subject to government search and seizure laws.
